I feel like there's a lot of nuance when it comes to talking about the military because some people are like people who played Call Of Duty for 10 years straight and wanna kill minorities but also other people are oppressed people who can't afford college and are impressionable teenagers that got swept up by a recruiter and there are so many people in the military who are victims rather than oppressors idk

That's just my two cents and I can get supporting/loving someone who is in the military while hating the military

I know, I am. He wasn't in the AF when we first met, he had gotten out a year or so prior to me meeting him, and then he reenlisted about 2 years into us dating. It's what he wanted and I wanted to support him in doing something that is fulfilling for him, not just end our relationship because I don't like the military. He knows how I feel about it.

He's also the guy who argues with the racists/sexists/homophobes in his unit, like a guy literally wanted to fight him recently for being a socialist lmao. So while I hate the institution I love him and I kind of have to contend with that.

but I'm sure he's a good person

 

It sucks because I vehemently disagree with the military and it makes me sick to think about but I also love my bf and want to make our relationship work, I honestly think being with him is good in the sense that it takes a lot of communication and constant inventory of where we are as people to make it work, he also of course sees value in the military because he is privy to classified info I don't have and basically forms his opinions on our world presence based on that (for instance, he sees value having bases overseas for certain reasons). We disagree on things like that but on my fundamental beliefs on race, class, gender, sexuality, etc. we agree completely and he has even moved me to the left on certain things I had less knowledge about. He's incredibly intelligent and I think being with him has also helped me realize that places like the military are not a monolith and that wide ranges of people exist in them, I knew a lot of people in the military down in NC and while some of them were the psychopaths you imagine, most of them were kind and caring people.

 

Moving to Killeen a while back and living next to a military base did a lot of this for me, I completely get it.

 

Notepad++ is probably the most versatile/useful piece of software I use.

In some ways we are so different I wonder how we work but I guess it's been 6 years so something IS working. His base is in CT so he commutes when he has to go but a lot of them there are from NY and yeah they're fucking ignorant, some of the stories yeesh. Then I think of the value of having someone in there to call these people out, I mean imagine the incestuous Fox News hotbed if nobody held them accountable for what they said?

Sorry just to close this train of thought off and I'll be done -

At the end of the day my bf did not join out of some weird sense of pride or duty, he did it because he wanted the challenge of becoming a Pararescueman, which he did. He no longer does that but now he likes learning about computers and radars. He sees it as a personal goal for him. He takes his uniform off before going anywhere and hates being thanked for his service and hates that the military is basically a GOP weapon and hates all that weird camaraderie and how America as a whole has a weird boner for the whole thing. He's just a guy on the spectrum that likes order and a place where there is structure he understands and learning about nerdy things I have no interest in, and this is why I can live with this lol. I hope good people can actually help fix the system , imagine if cops didn't support their colleagues when they kill or harass innocent people
