People see lines and intrinsically need to know what they're for. It's part of every human's built-in FOMO. We all have it to some degree, some just experience it more intensely than others. A few weeks ago I was waiting in line to buy beer at Other Half Brewery in Brooklyn, the line was wrapped around the block, and I can't even tell you how many people driving by slowed down to ask what we were all waiting for. We see the line and think it has to be something worth waiting for.

tbf in New York a line could be for a club , a concert or a shoe store and they all look identical

also I'm always curious too, especially if it's at a venue

Oh yeah I'm not saying it's a bad thing, I just meant that I think @ComedownMachine was right to say that the longer a line is, the more it makes people want to wait on it. And I think that's a very human trait.

I have the worst FOMO out of anyone, believe me lol

I think he was also pointing out that the queue becomes more orderly with more people like in London where he's from

This is true, in Merry Ol' London town the queues can be cracking well organized, but even then if you wait too long on one you're liable to get right knackered. If you're really gagging for something, best to get in the queue early so you won't have to wait so long, you'll be bloody chuffed that you did I reckon.
