Can someone explain to me like I’m 5 the act of optioning players? Same as being “sent down” right? Why can’t we just streamline this vernacular? And “designating for assignment” has such a weird ass connotation vs what it actually seems to mean - “you ain’t on the team anymore.”

I still don't understand options since Gary Sanchez had only been optioned back to the minors once and he was out of options. Meanwhile there's players that have come up and down like 15 times

I could understand it but I just don't have the energy to dig into that part of the game lol

 

What is a Minor League Options? | Glossary

This is the best explanation I could find, and I still don’t quite get it. Hah.

 

Players have three option years once they've been added to the 40 man roster. During those three option years, they can be shuttled back and forth to the minors an unlimited number of times, hence why being a reliever is like riding a carousel between the majors and minors.

Once a player has been placed on a team's 40-man roster, a team has 3 option years on that player. A player is considered to have used one of those three option years when he spends at least 20 days in the minors in any of those 3 seasons.

Designated for assignment is when a player is immediately removed from the 40 man roster. The team then has 7 days to decide what to do. Trade? Release? Put on waivers? If the player is put on waivers and nobody wants them, they can be sent to the minors. Players with more service time (5 years) can't be sent to the minors without their consent.

Being put on waivers is when any team has a chance to claim them, but if multiple teams put a claim in, then the team with the worst record is awarded the claim. Apparently the waiver wire is just an email the league sends every morning stating which players have been put on waivers.

 

The language is weird and the only remedy is to play a ton of OOTP
