Thanks to everyone that participated! Yet another fantastic compilation under our belts!

I especially want to thank our very first special guest, Jonah Bayer for contributing to the compilation. Jonah wrote for Alternative Press magazine, and is the host of the Going Off Track podcast. He also plays in the band United Nations with Geoff Rickley from Thursday. He got wind from Dustin (Things So Impossible) that we were doing a Saves The Day comp and wanted to do a track. Pretty cool! Let's have more special guests in the future!

Everyone did such a great job! I suck at comments, so don't feel like your comment is better or worse than someone else's.

    @Things So Impossible - Freakish
Wow. What a way to begin the compilation. The way your vocals mix with the acoustic guitar is almost like they're having some sort of intercourse and it was rude of me to just barge into the room. Great work.

@elemenohpe - The Last Lie I Told / Jesse and Ny Whetstone
I love the garage punk feel of these two songs..works so well. I love the "Yeah!" in the Jesse cover. Great job all around.

    @trevorshmevor - At Your Funeral
You took on the classic. The beginning is so good, the soft, shoegazey acoustic effect you have fits the song so well, and to have it all the way through with electronic effects, awesome.

@bradsonemanband (Cootie Catcher) - Ups and Downs
You never let me down Brad. Another great cover. I love how raw it is. Your vocals are so similar to Chris Conley. Also thank you for putting another stellar compilation together, Brad, you're always so supportive of everyone on the compilation.

    @nothingsforeverdude - Stay
You said you were sick right? Just double checking because for the arrangement of this song at least, your vocals were on point. The simplicity of the whole thing works so well for you, you definitely had a hold on your ability to sing while sick, you didn't put too much expectations on yourself. Great job.

    @DashboardProfessional - Lucky Number
Your covers are becoming a staple of these compilations, and something I always look forward to. You did a great job again here. The beginning with the popping, it was coming through a record player or radio was a very cool effect, intentional or not.

InfiniteArms (Open Field) - Morning In The Moonlight / Where Are You?
MITM: I did this all in 25 minutes because I was scared the compilation wouldn't have enough tracks! I definitely feel like I could do better. I wanted to beef up the compilation though. Each part of this was done in 1 take, I usually need a lot more takes, so there's part of it that makes me happy.

WAY?: Have I heard of timing? Apparently not. All my vocals seem a beat or two out of place except the middle part of this. Learning the guitar was way easier than the placement of the vocals, but In the end I got so frustrated it turned into accepting what was "good enough" because I think I was already on my 17th take (or something ridiculous) by the time I got a full take I was happy with.

@snaps (I Like Snaps) - Sell My Clothes, I'm Off To Heaven
I'm really into this kind of music lately. The whole progressive rock/emo stuff. So this caught me at a good moment. Really, really awesome cover dude.

Jonah Bayer - Banned From The Back Porch
I don't know your chorus.fm username! I would tag you otherwise! Really good cover though!

    @xkhiemster - You Vandal
I love the guitar work on this. Your timid vocal style on this works quite well for the arrangement you chose.

  5. Interesting that there are three tracks each from Through Being Cool and Ups and Downs, but none from Sound the Alarm and Daybreak. Also, lots of acoustic throughout. As such, the comp is a lot more mellow and less angsty than I expected.

Proud to be part of another great comp. Gosh, being the closer is such pressure. And I think I'm the only one with body mutilation in the lyrics.

  6. 1. @Things So Impossible - Freakish
You always impress the hell out of me, sir, and this no exception. I wanted to start the compilation off with a classic STD track, and when I heard yours I knew it had to be the opener. Fantastic cover.

    2. @elemenohpe - The Last Lie I Told
This is a great cover! I love the raw energy throughout it. It kind of feels like an old 2003-era Drive Thru Records song.

    3. @trevorshmevor - At Your Funeral
Gorgeous take on a classic STD track! I love the electronic drums and atmospheric textures you've put into it. Makes it feel haunting and beautiful.

    4. @bradsonemanband (Cootie Catcher) - Ups and Downs
I'm in the process of moving into an apartment up in Salt Lake City with my girlfriend. So all week I've been packing and all that stuff, and this weekend we did the bulk of our moving and would go until like 1 or 2 AM... I was worried I wouldn't be able to get a song done in time! So I got home at around 11 PM lastnight to learn my song and record it. When I got home though, I realized I'd packed up all of my recording equipment and it was up at the new apartment, haha. So I took my guitar, walked across the street to the park, and recorded straight to my phone in just a couple takes. Obviously not my best cover ever, but I hope you guys can give me a pass, ha. Hope you like it!

    5. @nothingsforeverdude - Stay
I'm so glad you participate in these compilations so often. You never disappoint! I like that we both finished our covers at about the same time, haha. High five to the procrastinators! I love your cover. It's short and sweet but still feels whole.

    6. @DashboardProfessional - Lucky Number
Once again, another awesome cover! This is such a great STD song, and you absolutely did it justice. I love the rasp in your voice, especially near the end of the song.

    7. @InfiniteArms (Open Field) - Morning In The Moonlight
I appreciate you doing a second cover in order to help fill up the compilation a little more. One thing I love about this little community we've built in here is how passionate we all are, and we want all of these to succeed and feel whole. There's so much support in here. So I appreciate that! Your cover is great. Like Joan's it's short and sweet, but to the point. I really dig the rawness of it. There's something about "one-take-jakes" that I love. It captures all the initial emotions with no second guessing or touch ups which sometimes takes that emotion away. Great cover!

    8. @snaps (I Like Snaps) - Sell My Old Clothes, I'm Off To Heaven
This was the first Saves The Day song I ever heard. It was on Vagrant Records' Another Year On The Street compilation, which introduced me to STD, Alkaline Trio, The Anniversary, and so many other bands that I absolutely fell in love with thanks to that CD. I'm actually in the process of getting members from all (or most) of the bands on that comp to sign my CD. I've got a few signatures so far! I still need Chris Conley to sign it though. Anyway, onto your cover... I absolutely love this! Such a beautiful and powerful take on it. I love everything about this one.

    9. Jonah Bayer - Banned From The Back Porch
First of all (if you're reading this) thank you for submitting a track to our compilation! This is an awesome take on this track. I especially love the Conley quote at the end. Nice touch!

    10. elemenohpe - Jesse and My Whetstone
Check it out! You're not the last track this time! Haha. Both of your covers are great, man. Like I said about the first one, I love the rawness of the recording. It has a garage-rocky kind of vibe to it that I totally dig.

    11. InfiniteArms - Where Are You?
I know how it is getting frustrated after doing a billion takes, and then just accepting it for what it is, and moving on from it. That's my process for basically every song I've ever recorded, haha. So I feel ya! But for what it's worth, I like this cover! Yes, the timing is a little off, if you compare it to the original, but this cover feels like you made it your own and I think the timing of the vocals works!

    12. @xkhiemster - You Vandal
I like the quiet vocals and guitar on this. Feels very intimate and natural. Awesome cover of a classic STD track.

    nooooo

I mean, it's a cool idea, but it erases nonbinary folks (like myself) and plus, most of the people who contribute are guys, so it'd be less interesting imo

songs by female artists on the other hand would be rly cool!

Freakish is an incredible song and you made it shine! Love the acoustic take of it. The track is well mixed the vocals and falsetto sounded great. Did you do both guitar tracks? They compliment eachother really well!

    2. @elemenohpe - The Last Lie I Told
Well done Dude! Love the instrumentation on this track! Glad to hear an older Saves the Day song on this comp! You nailed it brother! The guitar solo sounds awesome!

    3. @trevorshmevor - At Your Funeral
Loved this chill version of a classic Saves the Day song. Totally reminded me of the Postal Service when the electronic sounds kicked it. Great job dude!

    4. @bradsonemanband (Cootie Catcher) - Ups and Downs
Glad to see someone else listens to Saves the Day B-Sides. It is still incredible to me how you can put these covers together so quickly. Sounds great man!

    5. @nothingsforeverdude - Stay
Under the boards is one of the most under appreciated Saves the Day albums IMO. Loved your cover. The vocals sound really nice.

    6. @DashboardProfessional - Lucky Number
I haven't listend to this newest Saves the Day album enough and after hearing your cover I think I'm gonna give it a second chance. Loved this cover.

    7. @InfiniteArms (Open Field) - Morning In The Moonlight
When this record came out after SWYA it took me a long time to get into it. I totally dig your cover! The guitar tone sounds really cool. Very punk. Good job.

    8. @snaps (I Like Snaps) - Sell My Old Clothes, I'm Off To Heaven
This cover morphed into something completely different then we originally set out to do. Had a blast doing it with my friends Mike and Cody. Shane also added some background vocals and some production/mastering direction. Thanks for listening. I was telling @bradsonemanband that my family has no idea who Saves the Day is let alone their obscure B-side on a Vagrant comp...

    9. Jonah Bayer - Banned From The Back Porch
Jonah this is one of the coolest songs from Through Being Cool. Loved your chill version.

    10. elemenohpe - Jesse and My Whetstone
The first time I heard Say Anything was a Jesse and My Whetstone cover on some obscure Saves the Day fan site. This was before ..is a real boy. I always loved the acoustic EP STD did. Glad you covered this song! Sounds cool!

    11. InfiniteArms - Where Are You?
Dude, your cover sounds great! Your vocals kinda remind me of Gatsbys American Dream. The guitar work is also rad.

    12. @xkhiemster - You Vandal
A Saves the Day comp wouldn't be complete without this jam. Glad you covered! What a fun cover of the song and you gave it a whole new feel. Thanks for submitting.

All - Great Job Everyone! This was another fun record. July is super busy for me so I don't know if I will be able to submit for YC but I know you guys will do it right!

P.S. We missed a couple STD albums...

    1. @Things So Impossible - Freakish
Your vocals are (always) killer. Such a unique timbre and strong range. Nice acoustic rendition. Like @snaps said, the layered guitars fit perfectly.

    2. @elemenohpe - The Last Lie I Told
I wanted this cover to sound like the original with an added lead guitar, synth and more emphasis on syncopation between the bass/guitars for that little ramp up riff that appears throughout the song (it's most noticeable at the end of each measure during the last "belting-it-out" vocal parts at the end). I'm real happy with it overall.

... @InfiniteArms - Thanks! I can see the "garage" feel from the drums... especially during the "I can see some dogs" fill. The toms sound kind of dumpy, like early A Wilhelm Scream.
... @bradsonemanband - Wow, that DTR comparison is one of the most rewarding compliments I could get next to be compared to Glassjaw or Brand New! Thanks bud.
... @snaps - I spent a lot of time working on my guitar tones for these songs. Working with Amplitube is still new to me and I'm trying to figure out the best way to record with it... these tracks were DI but for YC I'm going to try running my phone through my half-stack on the clean channel and mic that. I appreciate the kind words!

    3. @trevorshmevor - At Your Funeral
I wasn't expecting this Postal Service-y (as snaps pointed out) rendition from you but I am hella impressed! Those drums are on point and I really loved the synth that you used. I've found most virtual synths to be too abrasive. Great job.

    4. @bradsonemanband (Cootie Catcher) - Ups and Downs
For recording this on your phone, in a park, it sure sounds good! Way to be resourceful, haha. Hope you have more time to put into your YC cover (I want to hear some drums, LP is a beast). Also hope you enjoy your new place in SLC.

    5. @nothingsforeverdude - Stay
Great as always. Your playing style always compliments your vocal delivery.

    6. @DashboardProfessional - Lucky Number
Your voice is also really great. The percussion was a good touch, what did you use for it? Almost sounds like you're just banging on the back of an acoustic guitar... I'm sure that's not it though... is it?! haha

    7. @InfiniteArms (Open Field) - Morning In The Moonlight
The two songs that you picked were actually my 2nd and 3rd choices. They're both really quirky STD songs that vaguely resembled the band they were around Through Being Cool (my personal fav STD-era). You did a great job layering the guitars. That last chord is super eerie.

    8. @snaps (I Like Snaps) - Sell My Old Clothes, I'm Off To Heaven
The production here is fantastic. The morose sound of the music really matches the music and then the palm muting - more rocking part kicks in and it juxtaposes the vocals... that back and forth is so cool. You guys sound great... the collaboration aspect is really awesome.

    9. Jonah Bayer - Banned From The Back Porch
Very interesting take on this song. I honestly didn't recognize it until the "oh, who is this" part! Nice of you to submit something for this. The cello(?) is a nice, subtle touch. The spoken word is also really cool. Good job!

    10. elemenohpe - Jesse and My Whetstone
Confession time. I didn't know this was a Saves The Day song until about 2 weeks before the covers were due. There was an unsigned pop-punk band I liked named Close Only Counts. In 2012 they released an album called Do Bad Things and on it was a cover of Jesse and My Whetstone. I listened to that record a lot that year as my band practiced an hour and a half from where I lived (and most of the shows we played were 2-3 hours away) and I spent a lot of time driving. After I finished my first cover, I decided to listen to more STD while I was cleaning my house and I heard their EP version. I immediately started singing along but didn't know how I knew the tune... took me a while before it dawned on me that COC version was a cover. Then I listened to the Say Anything version and STD's live one from the b-sides release. I kind of took things I liked from each version and put them in my own. I think I mastered the volume too low though... still learning.

... @InfiniteArms - "Yeah!" that, came from the aforementioned cover by Close Only Counts. I always loved singing their version in my car on the way to work. The "yeah" was always particularly fun with the windows down and stereo cranked.
... @bradsonemanband - Thanks again. I don't think either of my songs are particularly good "closers" this time around. ;-)
... @snaps - I actually hadn't heard the Say Anything version until the same day I heard the STD one! I didn't even know it was a STD song when I heard it on that Close Only Counts album. Funny, I thought it was one of their best songs until I found out it was a cover. Thanks again!

    11. InfiniteArms - Where Are You?
I love the way you sang this one. Guitars are also layered really well. Great job.

    12. @xkhiemster - You Vandal
Your vocals make the lyrics sound much sadder than they do when Chris sings them on Through Being Cool. It fits your stripped down, yet still aggressive arrangement. Glad you did this one!
