This is a problem in pretty much every major capitalist city though. Space is at a premium with real estate demand far outpacing the supply, so since rich people own everything and want to narrow down who they rent or sell to, and maximize profit of course, they make it harder to afford and qualify for their properties. The higher prices well-off people will pay, the further real estate companies will outprice the lower working class, it drives everything else in the economy getting costlier as well. It’s a vicious cycle and its gonna require a lot more subsidies and a LOT of min wage hikes / tax raises for the upper class to slow the process down. Gentrification seems to be accelerating all over the country since the tech boom started.

 

Fuckin Seattle used to have 2br apartments for less than 1500 ten years ago. I wanted to move there when I was in college.

Now you’re lucky to get under like 2500 for a SMALL one and that city is now so expensive I wouldn’t even move there if I DID get a good salaried professional job
