Some Green Day fans are starting to speculate that the band may be working with Butch Walker, the case has been laid out over at Green Day Authority:

In a post on Green Day’s Reddit forum, u/jinxpoetry dug deeper into the Butch Walker connection noting that in a video he posted to his Instagram from a recording studio, you can see what appears to be Tre Cool’s drum set (along with Walker singing “making records is very, very fun”), the video was liked by both Tre and his wife.

So long as you can actually hear the influence of Butch Walker on the songs, I'd be all about them working with him. It could potentially help "freshen" up their sound a bit.

The band needs somebody with a good ear to rein them in a bit... I have zero evidence beyond the records themselves to back this up, but a big issue on the last few albums seems like it could have been a little too much creative control on the band's part (i.e., nobody saying "Uh, that's not the best idea, guys").

Was there any news about them doing a Dookie 25th anniversary tour? I remember it was speculated a few months back but I haven't heard anything about it since.

Green Day lost me when they did that trilogy album thing awhile back. Too much nasally sounding Billie Joe and cheap guitar solos.

I miss early 2000's Butch Walker... That guy would have produced an amazing Green Day record

Did you hear Revolution Radio? It's not American Idiot, but it's not THAT far behind it. It's great, top to bottom. The trio is bad overall, so I get that, but RR was full of amazing songs that translated really well live.

    Butch makes everyone better.

  9. He's only gotten better with age. What he did on those early American Hi-Fi/Marvelous 3 albums you can hear in The Struts.

Hey! Album is one of my all time favorite albums. I'd love a little of that influence on a Green Day record

  11. Big stadium rock and Green Day seems like a natural fit in 2019.

Not everyone feels that way about his work as a producer.

That’s fair. This (potential) album with Green Day could be cool. He’s worked with two artists before that I love to listen too, and with all the hype I was let down by some production elements I noticed. That’s not a critique of all his work though, because I have limited exposure.

I did, and I liked about 70% of that record. The other 30% was the stuff that somebody else should have said "no" to, haha (Say Goodbye, Outlaws, Troubled Times, Ordinary World). I'll give "Ordinary World" a bit of a pass in that regard because it was written with a different purpose in mind but... Yeah. Still. Each of those songs is super boring both in and out of the context of the album, IMO.

I feel that way about a lot of 21st Century Breakdown too. That album has some great parts, but many of those songs fall apart or get really boring by the end.

All I'm really trying to say is, I hope whoever they work with next as a producer kinda tells them when to pump the brakes a bit and remind them of their strengths.

  16. This would be amazing. I’ve always thought that Green Day at this point would sound great with that Americana vibe that Butch gives off. Bring on some slide guitar!

I didn’t think the Americana songs were the strongest elements on Brian Fallon’s ‘Painkillers’.

  18. Nooooooo! Haha it’s all good and in honesty they might not be. I absolutely love all of Painkillers and Butch’s Stay gold. If it is in that realm more or less i would be really excited.

I love Brian and there are great songs on Painkillers. I still think the Molly and the Zombies version of Long Drives is so much better than the Brian Painkillers version of Long Drives.

Painkillers could have pulled back the Americana elements on that record. Brian has Americana in his voice when he’s not evening trying (like Gaslight’s National Anthem). That’s just me though.

Ha, I love all those songs, especially "Outlaws." Weakest part of that record is either "Youngblood" or "Bouncing off the Walls."

The first thing I thought when listening to "Troubled Times" was "Hah! This is going to be on a trailer for that Fox show Lucifer in like, three months."

"Outlaws" is an okay song, I guess. I just don't find it very interesting or catchy. I never feel compelled to listen to more than the first 1/3 or so of the song before pressing onto the next one. It just kinda drones... It would have been a great if they cut it in half. Doesn't need to be five minutes long (which is what I was saying--good idea, but they got a tad bit self-indulgent with it, I think).

The two songs you named are "weak" in the sense that they don't really change the game by any stretch, but they're incredibly solid pop-punk songs that can stand on their own. It's Green Day doing Green Day. Which I will take any day of the week.

It's probably just a matter of taste. I'm not saying anything on the album is bad. Just that some of it leaves me just... Pressing the skip button. Every time.

I feel like the narrative around Revolution Radio has always been incorrect. It was heralded as a "Back to basics" record simply because it was 12 tracks and not a trilogy or a rock opera. That being said, it wasn't back to basics pop-punk album but more of a summary of what Green Day has been throughout their entire career, might as well have been self-titled since it functioned as a reset. There's not really a dud in the trilogy (well, maybe except for "Nightlife") but I think it was just exhausting hearing 3 albums of Green Day without too much stylistic switch-ups. I hope they continue to age gracefully and don't try to chase trends/modern top 40 sounds like Weezer and Blink-182. Nothing against those bands but I feel like Green Day is smarter than that.
