Kind of the same for me.

I’ve watched the first 2 seasons of The Wire and the first season of The Sopranos and have no urge / desire to finish them out. They’re good, at times great, but nothing that pulls me in or demands I continue.

  2. I just rewatched next week’s promo (mostly because some idiots on twitter swear Euron looks shocked bc there’s another dragon LOL) and noticed that The Golden Company are 100% escorting a prisoner in that quick shot.

And Euron looks like he’s staring up at clouds and the sun and is realizing Drogon is about to burn the ever living hell out of his ships. People are wild

Ditto those who think The Wire is overrated. Soprano’s took me forever to watch, but it’s so incredible. Only knock on it is that it can feel dated at times. Breaking Bad remains my favorite, but there is some straight up cartoon hijinks in some spots that I was never able to look over. Thrones suffers from lazy writing often, but overall is a quality product. That’s all I have haha.

Sopranos did such an incredible job of referencing current trends for the time that STAYED relevant, so it’s shockingly less dated than one would reasonably expect.

BB I really loved and still enjoy thinking back on, but it definitely fell down in some ways like you said. I really wish the writing for Skyler had been better within the actual narrative, for example.

Just comparing all of the writing elements of BB and The Wire, I don't know how you can even argue they're on the same level. The depth of the interrelated themes of economic desperation, drug addiction/dealing, and law enforcement in The Wire still inspires serious inspection, outrage, and empathy in politics and culture. There was a class in my law school that just looked at the legal and policy implications of various stories in the Wire. Breaking Bad just gets silly when you examine it on a serious level.

Breaking Bad is more fun to watch because it's full of cliffhangers and funny characters and is probably the best pulp fiction television I've seen. And there's nothing wrong with that.

The Wire had a very different goal and achieved it by pretty much every standard.

I think they leaned way too hard on hysterical wife at points. Like, was she not supposed to be bullshit he was running a meth empire? And then they would randomly flirt with her “breaking bad” only to back track constantly. It’s almost as if they couldn’t decide what to do with her, so they just have her chain smoke and act angry towards the end. God bless Anna Gunn though. She should be in more.

Yeeeeeppppp. Most of the worst misogyny directed at her was the fault of the fans themselves, but they could have absolutely avoided a fair amount of it by actually making her as strong a character as the rest of them.

Gus adjusting his tie is peak silly and I could not love it more.

  10. Don't wights explode/evaporate along with the white walker who brought them back? When the NK was killed, shouldn't that have happened to a lot of the people we saw being burned at the beginning of Ep4, including Lyanna and Edd?

I heard this brought up in a podcast and am wondering if I'm missing something. Didn't think about it when I saw it.

Walt and Jesse were the only two with actual character development, and Walt’s character arc bordered on comical at points. I honestly believe Better Call Saul is the better show, maybe not for exciting plot points, but I believe they’ve done better with Saul then they ever did with Walter White.

I think it’s just the walkers that explode and the wights that lose their “life force”. Don’t remember them all disappearing before, but I could be wrong.

  13. Oh, I think you're right. I seem to remember the wight skeletons just collapsing into pieces onto the ground last season in that mission beyond the wall when they lured them all to a campfire.

Man, the disdain these people have shown for the fans the past week or two has been brutal. At least the cast is still adorable and appreciative.

This is what I was talking about earlier!!! Of all the crazy special effect / CGI things that happen, he's straight-face saying it was impossible to have a guy pet a big wolf...?!?!? We watched a blue-eyed undead ice dragon use his blue fire to melt a 300-mile-long 700-foot-tall magic wall made out of ice and rock.

hell if they framed it right, they could just use a real fucking dog and you wouldn't even need CGI

Not just talking about Game of Thrones here but more just all filmed media in general, I have noticed some filmmakers losing touch with some of the old-school, non-CGI-enhanced techniques and tricks. I am sure David Nutter is a smart guy and knows a lot about filmmaking and that one quote is making him sound really dumb, but that quote really reads like there was NO OTHER POSSIBLE WAY to have Jon Snow pet Ghost other than an elaborate, expensive, CGI, green-screen setup. Like I said, have someone hold a white furry blanket just off camera catching the edge of the frame and play the scene on Kit Harington's face.

    EXACTLY!!!!!

Its not like Ghost was cut completely out of the episode for budget reasons - he was there! It really reads like they just didn't feel like going through the hassle of getting them both in frame. Which is kinda dumb because I have thought og at least two dozen easy cheap ways they could have done it.

Also, I will stop ranting about this now, but this little scene being missed but having people flying on dragons and battling in the air is what a lot of people are talking about with the rushed last couple seasons. A lot of the little moments that made the show great are being left behind in the rush to the finish line. We are hitting the major action-packed scenes which is entertaining in the moment and really giving things that summer blockbuster feel but some of the stuff that made people really love the show is getting lost in the mad dash.

I also have to say that it really rubs me the wrong way to hear someone who is working on a show with per episode budgets larger than what many shows cost during entire seasons (or full series runs) talk about not having the money or wanting to put in the work to tell the story correctly. That’s just such a slap in the face.

All the talk about how poorly they did with women last week reminded me that these guys are seriously creating an alt-history series about if the Confederacy didn’t lose lmao it’s going to be such a fucking mess

I’m going to be so mad if that show actually gets off the ground. I really hope that however these last two episodes go, HBO realizes that idea needs to die hard and fast. The thought of it at all was disgusting when I first read about it, but after seeing the way they handle themselves here I’m just in awe of how bad it would be.
