How important is a hostage when neither side has any intentions of negotiating or surrendering?

Most of my problems with the writing of the show right now stem from the decision to shorten and condense this last season, and I am not sure who exactly made that call. I know the show being hugely popular is great for HBO but it has also become an extremely expensive juggernaut to produce.

Weren’t both condensed seasons chosen by the showrunners? I think everyone is pretty burnt out at this point.

This is one thing I keep coming back to. It feels like they’re trying to cram everything into these shortened seasons but they were the ones who decided to shorten the seasons. It’s not like they were only given 6 episodes and were like “shit ok how do we fit this in?” Maybe that is how it went, who knows. Not a huge complaint and I’m still thoroughly enjoying this season but it does stand out.

i'm not sure it is (at an inn or tavern outside of Winterfell). this scene happens before Jamie leaves Brienne crying, which happens at Winterfell. and there's the "war preparing" scene in the basement where Sansa says Jamie is staying and then she looks at Brienne like it was a request from her for Jamie to stay, so i don't think he was on the road with Tyrion and then came back and then left again.

(it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things so i don't know why i'm making such a post lol)

The entire endgame of Thrones would have been better served with the two final seasons racking in at 10 episodes each. Wouldn't even mind if the battle at Winterfell somehow took place as the Season 7 series finale or the premiere of Season 8

I literally don't know anything about the behind-the-scenes making of this show, but to my mind it doesn't seem very far fetched that that decision came from on high and the Benioff and Weiss saying that is a little bit of spin / good PR on their part...

I could be dead wrong and everyone is just burnt out. That is kind of lame though and if that is the case I would say maybe step back and let others who still have the passion take over .

I feel very torn about whether or not MORE time would have actually made for a better show given what the writers have done so far, but they certainly could have reordered a lot of it within the same timeframe and had very different stakes.

It does seem a little odd to me that writers who had no problem stretching some storylines out for a veeeeeeeerrrrrrry long time get to the endgame and decide that doing things quick and concise is the best way simply from a creative and storytelling perspective and no other reason.

A little bit like if GRRM said "I know everyone wants to hear how this ends" and finished the whole series up with one 200-page book. This is obviously a very extreme example and not exactly what I think is going on here, just trying to explain what I was saying .

just read that allegedly the showrunners always wanted to keep the series around 70-75 episodes so they're pretty much on the mark. and apparently Martin stopped writing episodes when they cut out Lady Stoneheart who was his favorite or some shit and he thought there could be 11-12 season. hmm.

I’m trying to find any articles about the number of episodes but everything is flooded with other stories right now. I’d be surprised if HBO was the one wanting less of it, but you could be right that they’re spinning it. The team seems to be pretty blunt about their motives usually though.

i was trying to search as well and then saw some link headers as "FINALE LEAKED. YOU WON'T BELIEVE IT!" and murmured "fuck fuck fuck" while quickly clicking my browser closed while not looking at the screen

Again, I think some of this stuff is putting a good spin on things and PR and the like, but if that 70-75 episode number thing is true then I do think they spent a lot of time bogged down and doing some serious wheel-spinning and are now oddly rushing through the very good part .

The series is a huge ratings monster but the longer it goes on usually actors and other people s contracts that you may have gotten a good deal on 10 years ago go up and up over time, and simply what is happening in the episodes themselves keeps getting more elaborate and expensive and hard from a production standpoint.

I've enjoyed every episode so far, this one included. Though it does kind of feel like it could have been two separate episodes. In one way, it kind of works to make Dany's decisions seem even more rushed an irresponsible. But on the other hand, I kind of wanted them to really focus on the devastation of the battle more.
