I think what makes Untitled so important for me was that it was the first album that I was completely invested in the making of. The studi videos, live feed, constant updates. It may have been the first album that I had expectations for too.

The enthusiasm in this thread is so rad. I still need to sit with the album a bit more and gather my thoughts, but I'm glad most of you are digging it.

I haven't caved :) only have heard the three they officially released

  7. This is alright. Some songs surprise me and others just are overproduced and definitely don't appeal to me like they used to. Like, I get it, that's been Blink for how long. But this just makes me miss Tom in the band even more and go back to listen to their old stuff. Idk. Maybe this will grow on me a bit.

It's even weirder to pretend nostalgia doesn't color feelings about a record.

Definitely not what I'm saying, you're missing the point and creating a straw man.

Eh, I'm not sure I'd say so. It's an odd comparison to make, there's really no metric by which to measure that. Regardless, though, to me they're both excellent examples of albums that were considered groundbreaking at the time for their respective bands but haven't held up.

It does. But what does that mean for my girlfriend who discovered untitled two months ago and is in love with that record?

Anything anyone enjoys over time has some nostalgic quality obviously. I get sentimental and nostalgic about Enema of the State, which came out when I was 11, and I still like the album but don't listen to it anymore because it is purely in that nostalgic category. Self titled I still spin regularly because it's more than nostalgia, it's good music that sounds better than almost any other band that was influenced by it.

Played this for my girlfriend this morning and she wasn't impressed. I'm drooling over the record and all she can day is "it doesn't sound like blink and it's too generic." I had to explain this is 2016 blink. She's still not impressed. Blah.

I just finished my fifth play through California.

...and now I'm listening to Neighborhoods, haha.

It's not an overarching thing, like no one's saying 100% of people who love untitled love it solely because of nostalgia. But I'm willing to bet that's a big factor for most people who were teenagers when it came out.

It makes more sense to me I guess because I liked it far more when I was 14 than even when I was 18. In the case of Deja, I was super late on it and it really didn't click with me at all.

Jerry Finn's death totally changed the trajectory of this band--way more than DeLonge's love affair with UFOs and U2.

yeah, mine did too - but as a while she's just not digging the album. Can't win them all.

  23. You said there's a reason in your very first sentence ... then dismiss the one I've seen most prevalent. Give *me* a break.

  24. You can look at streaming trends ... and see that Untitled actually does not pick up new listeners the same way the other albums too. People over rely on their own experiences and don't look at the data as a whole. Your own favorite. Your own friends. That's just not how it works.
