    oh word?

I love this album so much. This is going to be my album of the summer. It also beats Neighborhoods by a loooonnggggggggg shot, despite me loving Neighborhoods.

In general, I guess. I agree this is the best music they've released in a long time

I always wanted the smiley, but I want to find a way to incorporate tiny pieces from each album. I just don't know how to do that yet. My wife is super creative and great at art so I'd like to see what she can come up with.

I haven't been able to see the what everyone else on here thinks yet but I'd say my early favorites are Los Angeles, Sober, Left Alone. As a whole, it is way better than neighborhoods but I still think After Midnight is my favorite post reunion song (subject to change, obviously)

Finally made it from across the state back east. Then download the album. And head south to watch my sporting team win in overtime.

Listened to it on trip there and back.

    Thoughts...

Really digging it. Sounds great. Love the throwback poppy style. Possible critisim is it's a bit safe. Maybe next album can work on that.

Was a bit scared after not being blown away by rabbit hole and then not all too stoked with No Future but the unreleased tracks are fantastic

Favourites are Sober for sure. Then she's out of her mind.
Love that last minute of the title track
Was singing along to San Diego by second chorus

I really liked Neighbourhoods. But I'll think this could chase TOYPAJ as my third fave blink CD

Wow. This post really hit me hard this morning for whatever reason. Very well said and it encapsulates my feelings so accurately it's scary.

Untitled for the longest time was my favorite album. I remember going into Senior year, with my musical interests just starting to branch out into new territories. And it seemed like just as I maaaaaybe started to question how many more pop-punk records I could truly get into from blink, they drop untitled on us to squash my doubts about their longevity with me.

But at this point it's pretty clear to me that I very much over-emphasized that particular detail.

Nostalgia will forever be the driving force with untitled for me, and that's ok.

Blink-182 getting talked about, praised, and hyped in 2016. Is someone cutting onions?

This definitely speaks volumes. I think I would've blown this idea off a couple of years ago, but now I embrace it and use it to fall into better listening habits. I went through a long stretch of just downloading music constantly and most of the time my first time listens were accompanied by work, studying, or something of that nature. Now, I'm more focused on creating a better listening environment and tying my listening to better moments. I'm rambling but I think you get the picture.

Blink was good at rockfest but I am disappointed with how they handled Matt. He didn't say a word to the crowd the whole night and it almost felt like they were trying to hide that he is in the band now rather than embrace it. So you have this guy singing a ton of songs and he never interacts with the crowd.. They sounded great tho

Except, if you look at their current "marketing", you could believe the band is now called "Blink 182 with Matt Skiba", like it's a late night show or a Soul band from the 60s

    so last night was interesting...

I started downloading the album and immediately started feeling uneasy. I had a terrible stomach ache. I didn't want to listen to the album until I felt better. All night I threw up and couldn't sleep... but now I'm awake, feel better, and am ready to listen to the Blink record! yay!

    (it was food poisoning)

So now that I've heard California like 5x through, anybody know if there will be standalone vinyl available later on or is what's up on the pre-order page in the bundles all we're going to get?

My least favorite songs on the album are the ones that David Hodges co-wrote, ironically.

Interesting perspective regarding why (untitled) resonates so much with people in this scene. It definitely underscores why certain albums stay with people. You can't discount the emotional/temporal impact of when someone discovers an album. (untitled) may not always be able to directly compete with the quality of an Alkaline Trio or Cure album, but for many listeners, it was a gateway album to other styles of music. Important thing to keep in mind, but I don't think it's the whole story.

IMO, (untitled) is properly rated and has aged the best in the band's catalog. It took some sonic risks at a time where the band became better songwriters under Jerry Finn. I don't think I'm alone in saying that the thrill I get from spinning (untitled) has less to do with nostalgia than say Enema or TOYPAJ. The janky warehouse vibe on Violence, the new wave on Always, the hip-hop under currents on The Fallen Interlude--they all still sound fresh in 2016. No pop-punk band out there--not even blink-182--has really made a record that improves on those sounds (you can maybe argue Crimson dabbles in that aesthetic, another Jerry Finn production, but it doesn't strike the same balance between goth, post-punk, and pop-punk). blink really caught lightning in a bottle and it was the last time you really get to see their chemistry operating at 100%. Part of the excitement of (untitled) stems from the fact that we're hearing three friends at their creative apex, and it yielded the best work of their career. That's why I think people keep coming back to this album--there's an expansiveness here that the band simply hasn't been able to tap into again. On ANY of their side projects.

I listened to California about 4 times last night. On the whole, I like it, but it falls short when I think about it as an addition to the blink-182 cannon. I think Skiba was a good addition to the group, especially since many of these songs push him to write fast, upbeat, pop-punk. But I was caught off guard by how safe the album felt. While I was expecting something closer to Enema/TOYPAJ after hearing Built this Pool and Rabbit Hole, I'm a bit disappointed that Hoppus and Barker purposely retreated to a sound that both of them had grown past and improved upon after 2003. I was hoping for a few curveballs--1-2 Stockholm Syndrome/Hearts All Gone type numbers. Los Angeles is the one song that represents something of a new sound for this band, and even that sounded a bit like Alkaline Trio circa Good Mourning. There are some stand outs for sure. Cynical is a hell of an opener. She's Out of her Mind/No Future/Left Alone definitely reward on repeat listens. Bored to Death is massive. But the whole album feels very stilted and focused on capturing some kind of overworked beach rat vibe. There are no moments that shock me, no moments that get your heart pumping because they came out of left field You can argue that musicality is somewhat limited in pop-punk, but I think there are ways to find new embellishments with simple chords. blink's made a career out of it. Listening to California, I was happy to hear Hoppus and Barker playing together but I felt like I was listening to something on the average side that was fairly inoffensive. For guys that have been in the music business for over 20 years, I expected a bit more ingenuity and danger. Maybe John Feldmann was a good choice to get them all in a room with no judgments, but he didn't seem to push them forward. Which is fine if that's what Hoppus/Skiba/Barker wanted. It just makes for a less diverse offering.

Unlike many people on this message board, I know I'm going to prefer Neighborhoods in the long run. I liked the darker vibe, the space in those songs, the interplay between Hoppus and DeLonge, and the more modern touch many of those songs were exploring. It has its flaws (the back half is pretty weak) but it also felt like the band was using what they had learned from their past musical endeavors. I prefer it when bands stretch their legs like that. California will get a lot of spins from me, but I think my taste skews towards what the group was trying to do on Neighborhoods--regardless if Tom DeLonge is a Grade-A UFO nut job.

TL;DR There’s something about California, I can’t quite put my finger in.

So a pretty weird coincidence I noticed on 'Los Angeles'. The opening 'day in day out' line, specifically.

Here's the Matches' 'Papercut Skin', off 2006's Decomposer. John Feldmann (!) produced that track, and Mark Hoppus also worked with the Matches too. Note the song's first line...

Just struck me when I was listening to Los Angeles for the first time...fun coincidence!
