You’re comparing apples to oranges. For years now handheld sales have dwarfed console sales in Japan. The PS4 did very well for a console, but that’s it. The 3DS was/is so, so much bigger. This cheaper one is for all those people that haven’t made the jump from 3DS, because the Switch is too expensive, too fragile, too big and so on. There’s a lot of those people. On top of that, Nintendo has sold a lot of 3DS units even since the Switch, for much the same the reason. They want those people buying Switch instead.

As for the rest, we don’t know if it will have detachable joy con or not, if it will “dock” with a cord only, or if this just means that you can buy a doc and extra controlles should you somehow want to or what. It might not even be dockable after all.

 

My guess is that the "Portable" Switch model will be something like this:

- It will have a longer battery life than the current Switch but it won't be as powerful
- It won't come with its own dock, it will have a charge cable with a USB wall adapter, however it will be able to connect to existing docks via either its charge cable or via a port on the unit itself
- It will be able to sync with existing controllers/joycons, but its own control input will not be detachable
- It will be backwards compatible with 3DS games (not really but I can hope)

 

I mostly agree. I don’t think it’ll be less powerful (unless you the fact that some games run better docked). It won’t have rumble though. Also no 3DS games lol

I think there’s a chance it may be slightly less powerful than an undocked Switch just to help the battery life. But yeah no rumble for sure.

 

By the way, some still say that the there will be a modestly upgraded version of the current Switch still. Maybe that would just replace the current model though, like the Xbox One S replaced the base Xbox One, rather than a seperate skew.

 

Maybe. If it would not be dockable after all, it could potentially be a little less powerful because it never has to be able to put out resolutions higher than 720p. I guess they could also cap it there even if it is dockable, but that means it would be pretty visually compromised once docked.

 

Yeah I mean I’m mostly just wondering if they’re willing to make a compromise like that because this is supposed to be portable-focused. Not shipping it with a dock of its own would send the message that the best way to play it is not docked. It’s going to be interesting to see what they came up with.

 

I love the idea of them having a Switch where you can't switch between methods of play.

If that was directed at me, I don't know what you are talking about. I never complained about them selling a different version. I just said I found it amusing they're releasing a device that goes completely against the reason why they named their console "Switch".

 

That's probably not what it's going to be though, like yeah the idea of that is funny but it's also most likely not what they're doing

 

Oh, I agree. I just thought the idea was funny because someone in here suggested that. I'm sure it would come with a cable or some sort of adapter that would let it be connected to the dock or TV.

I’m guessing those next Pokemon games will outsell Let’s Go. Apparently Nintendo said Let’s Go underperformed, which is a luxury problem given these numbers.

think it was Jeff at Giant Bomb that played around with some styluses on the Switch out of curiosity when SMM2 got announced and said they performed kinda poorly, i wonder if this one is more designed around the Switch's screen sensitivity but its probably just a generic
