So the trick to instituting campaign finance reform is to.. vote for candidates who benefit the most from the current system of campaign financing?

Anyone feel like they’ve got their country back yet? No? That, after all, was the rallying cry of the Leave campaign – the transatlantic echo of "Make America Great Again". There’s a precedent for what happens when svengalis with aggressively terrible haircuts are allowed to appeal to parochialism and fear in the teeth of a global recession, and it isn’t pretty.

It says something about this campaign that I’m no longer at all worried about risking hyperbole or unoriginality when referencing all that Nazi history they made us study in school. I’m just frightened. I’m frightened that those who wanted "their" country back will get their wish, and it will turn out to be a hostile, inhospitable place for immigrants, ethnic minorities, queer people – everyone and anyone who wasn’t included when Farage proclaimed victory for "ordinary, decent people" this morning in front of a posse formed entirely of angry-looking, whey-faced blokes in suits.

Voting in or running for office in primaries is most important. Don't like the democrat in office? Pick a primary opponent and get a turnout higher than 10%.

I guess Jo Cox wasnt an "ordinary, decent" person. Farage is like a Tim Curry character.

When someone gets themselves just within reach of making a proper intellectual breakthrough, then they stop right before making the final push.

doesn't Brexit show why it's ridiculous to have the populous vote for major referendums 'yes' or 'no' that are extremely complex to understand? While NOTHING gets done in our country with our system, it's pretty ludicrous to have the people vote so directly for such things.

I kind of agree. I know most people dislike things like the electoral college but it's there to avoid disasters like this.

But change the party from the inside!

The fact that every platform point that Sanders proposed (the ones in which there were differences between his position and Clinton's) was left out should have been all the justification he needed to denounce the DNC / not say he was voting for HRC. What a fucking sham.

Right. Because the elites know what they're doing. More than anything, it speaks to the way in which the ideologies of the ruling class can get away from them and manifest in counterintuitive ways. As a result of some of the harshest austerity measures in the western world, the British working class is suffering and they had a ready-made villain provided by both parties in the form of migrants who had brown skin. This was made easier with the Islamaphobic core at the heart of the war on terror. One can blame the "ignorant" population and hope for a savior from on high, but those saviors tend to be complicit in, or the creators of, the social crises that open up a vacuum for the racists and xenophobes to step into.

That's not true, from what I've read. Pretty sure his people got some good language on the finance sector in there. Not sure where I read it though.

Everything that I'm reading says the text already included a call to index the minimum wage and to raise it to $15. I'm confused what this amendment would have done that the text doesn't already do? Genuinely asking.

    Tied it to inflation.

That way in 10 years they can look like the good guys for pushing for a $20 min wage

Clinton Opens Double-Digit Lead in National Poll

Given the current state of the race, the argument for deferring to Hillary is losing its currency. The debate now isn't between the hoards of racist and the enlightened liberals - i mean, Hillary is in the former category if anything - but, between a left-wing and the center that represents the DNC's rotting mediocrity.

I've been living in Spain this past year and I'm nervous/excited to see how these second elections turn out today. If they can't form a government again there's gonna be chaos haha

i'm writing a book, leave me alone.

i'll be doing some investigating later tonight, but for a nominee to win the US Presidential election they need a certain amount of votes or electoral votes or something right? so theoretically speaking, if the majority of voters were to vote for someone other than Hillary or Trump, there's a chance neither would be elected President? and since i've only been of age for two elections i can't remember what the ballot looks like but is there a spot to write in a name? what if people write in Sanders or Reptilian Leader #6?
