I really don't think that's fair to what Ron Howard was able to pull off out of a CRAP situation. I really feel like a lot of the parts of Solo just as a movie work great. The actors all give pretty great and natural performances, which just right there gives it a pretty big leg up over the prequels.

It is really when looked at overall in the grand scheme of things and as a Star Wars movie with a $275 million budget (!!! HOLY F-CK !!!) that it is ultimately a disappointment. There are SO MANY amazing stories they could have told with that kind of budget, filmmakers like Ron Howard and Lord & Miller, and the phenomenal cast they had. As an overall project it really was a huge squandered opportunity and mistake. As a sci-fi space heist movie, its pretty cool.

Solo needed the vision and creativity of George. The prequels needed the direction/acting of Solo.

Solo ended up being a good, fun time. I also really liked Alden's performance. I've said it before, but I never wanted that movie, but I left the theater thinking I wouldn't mind another Solo movie. Most of the origin checklist stuff is now out of the way, so I could see them doing something inventive with another installment. But, I'm pretty confident in saying we won't get another one.

I mentioned this the other day too, but it makes me think of that story about how George Lucas reached out to some other filmmakers in hopes that they would direct the prequels - the story specifically mentions Steven Spielberg - but they all said no and told him he should direct. For me it is a huge bummer to think about, because I really do feel like the prequel trilogy could have been significantly better as a whole if talented directors who were passionate about directing the movies came in and did them, even if they ended up pretty much telling the same overall story.

Imaging if George Lucas had been able to get Spielberg, Ron Howard and maybe Joe Johnston (practical choice) or John Milius (WTF but crazy fun choice, and they ran in the same circles way back) to come in and each direct one of the three prequel films!

  6. Do they get better scripts too?

In my made up scenario I like to think that filmmakers like those people would have stood up to Lucas a little bit and pushed back on some of the sillier and bad ideas, leading to ultimately better movies overall.

In all reality, Spielberg and whoever else probably looked at the scripts and were like 'NOPE' in their heads but then just told George 'hey buddy, this is your baby - you really should be the one to direct these.'

Solo needed to let Lord and Miller be Lord and Miller

  9. I don’t trust those two on anything after Crystal Skull haha. So I’m biased.

It’s truly amazing how many people are choosing to willfully misunderstand what they mean when they say “end of the saga”

Honestly, I find Crystal Skull so insultingly awful that I think my brain decides to just pretend it does not exist despite the fact that I have watched it 1¼ times. At some point after seeing it in theaters I think I told myself it can't possibly be as bad as I remember so I put it on. Needless to say, I shut it off very soon after. The fact that Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, Harrison Ford, John Williams, Michael Kahn, Janusz Kaminski - not to mention actors like Cate Blanchett, Ray Winstone and John Hurt!!! - were all involved in that abomination honestly blows my mind. Me blocking it out is like a defense mechanism.

If I am being totally honest, I would have preferred that J.J. Abrams consulted with Rian Johnson as to where the story should go and how he should proceed with Ep IX rather than George Lucas. I know the two allegedly talked, but I mean in reference to the recent story that came out saying JJ consulted Lucas in a time of need.

Finally had my dad, who’s a big Star Wars, watching TLJ. He liked it as much as TFA. His favorite scene was definitely when Luke was on Crait.

My neighbor thinks Palpatine is actually a Skywalker.

Isn't Matt Smith in this? I feel like he could be the clone of Palpatine (if they go the way of the comics).

I mean, if they confirm he created Anakin with the force, he technically is his “father”.

I really love how they had Luke’s line “No one’s ever really gone” and then Palpatine mock laughing at him. Gave me chills

It would be really cool to see Rey and Kylo fight as they have a force connection, going in and out between both of their environments. I’m so curious to see how the force bond will be implanted in this

That is a great concept but wouldn’t be surprised if it’s not touched or even addressed. Rey closed the connection at the end of TLJ and I just don’t think JJ will explore it further.

It’s too good not to use again, I’m betting it will be used again in some way

He wouldn’t be a Skywalker, though. Anakin became a skywalker through his mother’s last name. The father, of Palpatine, wouldn’t be a skywalker.

Random theory that I don’t think will happen but could be interesting if done right:
Kylo was sent undercover into the First Order to find and eliminate Palpatine for good by Force Ghost Anakin. He’s asking his grandfather for guidance and feeling the pull to the light because he’s good deep down but pretending to be part of the dark side. I doubt it will happen and know there’s some holes in it but it could be a way for Kylo to be redeemed.

Honestly I could see that if not for the TLJ flashbacks that show the impetus of how Kylo began. And also just a lot of TLJ.
