Im still convinced it wasnt the right pick even without taking hindsight into account. If you’re looking at positional value, a RB at 4 is an awful use of a top 5 pick, and if you’re taking best player available regardless of position, they didn’t even take the best LSU alum on the board

Dino Dish gonna eat crow on this “Fournette is average” shit. Unreliable, absolutely. But he has special talent

 

Fun fact Michigan had the most players picked by school in that draft and most of them are terrible

 

Lol, I'd be happy if he turns out better than average! I'm just saying he hasn't done enough to show that he's anything more.

 

Yeah I mean being skeptical is perfectly fair but it’s a bit early to write him off.

If he finds a way to finish his rookie deal with two very good, mostly healthy seasons, then I am right back to being happy with taking him and wanting him resigned. Wouldn’t even care that we took him too early by draft value standards.

As I’ve said before he has his work cut out for him. He’s got the talent and athleticism to be SCARY if he can stop getting in his own way.

 

To be clear, I never wrote him off. Being an average starting running back isn't a "problem" or anything, it's just not as high as someone would hope for such a highly drafted player.

 

An important thing to note too is that the bar for "average RB" is pretty high now

 

I still don’t really buy it. Imo Marlon Mack / Jay Ajayi / Lamar Miller are “average running backs”. Good enough to start but not real exciting most the time.

Fournette is at least “good”. Absolutely can’t say “great” or “elite” but average is really harsh for a guy who can do things most RB can’t do

 

Biased hot take: I think I’d take Mack over Fournette going forward

I think we're using different scales then because to me an average starting RB is better than an Ajayi or a Lamar

 

Marlon Mack is legit when they decide to actually give him more than like 15 carries a game

 

I’m just saying, he has the power/size of Mark Ingram and the speed of Todd Gurley. Plus he’s very effective as a receiving back. Aint nothing “average” about that.

Call him inconsistent all day - his lack of health is definitely involved because a lot of those poor, low YPC games he played were on a bum hamstring or ankle. But using the word “average” implies to me “his talent isn’t a primary threat” and I profusely disagree with that haha.

 

Note: don’t misinterpret, I didn’t say his vision or skill was as good as Gurley, just his speed. Before anyone wants to jump to conclusions and assume I meant he’s “as good”.

 

Fournette is the closest to AP since AP

 

That's about every year. Outside of Brady, who are the top Michigan players in the league? Graham and Lewan then a couple young guys like Hurst, Peppers, and Lewis?

 

This makes me worry for his daughter more than thinking he has that talent.

 

Ezekiel Elliott, from the level of talent to the team overuse to the domestic violence issues, is the closest player the league has to AP.

But Fournette fits the archetype of AP's play better.

I could name like 10-15 RBs I'd rather have than Len Fournette, easily
