re: sex work I won't pretend to know all the nuances but decriminalization makes sense to me bc making sex work illegal is literally taking away autonomous choice from them, most of them women, which seems p clearly bad and misogynistic. as far as consequences of decriminalization / legalization, I think most of those would stem from the way we treat marginalized groups and not specifically from them being sex workers (though I recognize that is also a stigmatized/marginalized group). decriminalization is a better idea than legalization imo bc legalization, esp as it relates to drugs, is heavily tied to gentrification (at least from my perspective) and the government actively profiting from the things that marginalized groups do to survive while simultaneously keeping sex workers, dealers, addicts, etc in prison is fucking disgusting. in conclusion, the convenience of decriminalization/legalization is cool but any participating in that stuff by me will always be done under the table. a lot of this is coming from a ~punk~ perspective and not all of it is directly translateable but I think this is good enough to be flexible and I'm not opposed to changing my perspective if presented w more info.

I work with women and children who have been sex trafficked and from that point of view I have a hard time seeing sex work as anything empowering or positive. In college I knew two ppl in my classes who were former sex workers, and both were trans. One said she was proud to do it because she was able to build the body for herself that she always wanted. The other woman said she convinced herself it was empowering at the time, but then realized later that it wasn't. I don't think sex workers should be arrested tho. It's gross that the woman will often get arrested cause it's her out there on the front lines while her pimp walks around free and then punishes her for not making her quota. I'm sure there are some women who feel personally empowered by sex work, but as a whole it is not empowering for women imo and seeing the tragic effects so closely and personally makes it difficult for me to rly be objective about it

sorry if this is a dumbass question but is sex trafficking = sex work? in the sense that the former is a type of enslavement and the latter seems to imply at least some level of choice? does the latter work as a broader category that includes the former? just wanna make sure Im not like disrespecting anyone or misunderstanding you

 

I guess the broader category one. I consider sex work to include sex trafficking but I don't think they mean the same thing. I guess I've just been trained to use the term "sex workers" for those who've been trafficked as well. And like I'm no expert cause I'm not a sex worker, but I guess I see it like as long as there's a demand for women's bodies to be traded for goods, sex trafficking is going to continue to happen because there are always going to be those ppl who exploit women and the system. Like strip clubs. I am not a fan of strip clubs because so many of the dancers have been trafficked. Sure, not all of them. Some are making an honest living and doing their thing, but as long as there are women being trafficked and I don't know who is doing this for personal empowerment and who is doing it against their will, I just can't support it as a whole. If that makes sense. Like just knowing I could watch a woman dance who could be trapped and I have no idea is so horrifying I could never go to one. Or like porn. Who is doing this because they have agency and want to, and who is being raped and forced and exploited? I don't know and I don't think there is a way to know for sure so I'm just not gonna support that industry. Like I guess I want to say I support sex workers but not sex work. Idek if that makes sense haha but it's where my thought process is at. I have a lot more to learn on this issue tho so I welcome any feedback
