Most definitely PG-13. Would be happily surprised by an R.

I don't want it to be R. I want as many people as possible to see it and be as warped by it as everyone else who read the books in elementary school.

Yeah considering it's based on a book I read in elementary school, it should be something you can bring a kid that age to see

Yeah I mean I get that. But I wish it was made for the people who read it as kids. I feel like that book scared me like only a rated r movie could now. Those books were way scarier than goosebumps or other style books of that time. I’m still excited to see it though. Also for better or worse, my parents let me see rated r movies as a kid and those books never stuck out to me as being for kids. I’m biased obviously since that’s when I read them

That also is kind of the allure of the series though. A bunch of kids books that were clearly a bit more haunting than expected for kids books. The storyline's twists usually had me questioning my sanity at lunch time.

But honestly I don’t think we should’ve been reading those books in elementary school. A scarecrow skinning someone doesn’t sound like something that would be in a pg-13 movie

It can still be scary without an R rating

Del Toro is the best pick I can imagine. The trailer is more than likely misleading to be a shock horror film thanks to the studio. His films are never represented accurately in trailers imo.

I agree. However I can’t think of a pg-13 movie that has scared me since the first ring

Love a lot of the films that end up with prestige horror tag, but god if that term doesn't annoy the shit out of me.

Gonna start saying I prefer prestige action films whenever I see talk about Mad Max, Mission Impossible or John Wick to counteract that energy in the world.

  12. I didn't come up with it, so I can stop using it haha

To be clear I wasn't levying any blame at you for using it, it just gets up my crawl when critics pontificate about the genre!

  16. Man, Curse of and Cult of Chucky are two of the best straight to DVD/Netflix films I've ever seen. Let Mancini keep doing his thing

Late to the @xkhiemster recommendation party BUT... I feel like Mike Flanagan is a good bridge between """prestige""" horror and mainstream horror. Oculus in particular is so good. The editing is just incredible and the story is compelling. It was also the first horror movie that made me finally get over myself and admit that I'm a fan and that I respect the genre instead of constantly trying to clarify with "I like x kind of horror movie even though the genre is bad."

  20. Oof, I've been there. I used to think certain genres of movies and music were inherently bad; now I'm like, I'm just drawn to certain kinds of things more than others, but that doesn't have to carry any sort of implication of it being good or bad.

Might have to add Oculus to my list! The premise alone is very intriguing.

  24. I'm not saying it isn't surprising, but I still think it's pretty shitty of them to reboot when the original director is still creating stories in that canon, especially without any blessings. But it is what it is. I'm still gonna see it, which is low-key the shittiest part.
