I know, who the heck wants to watch a YouTube video that passes the one hour mark, that's just two dudes having a conversation about the limitations of the most successful movie franchise of all time, & also comic book adaptation in general?

But, it's a really good conversation. I watched half of it last night & the other half this morning. A lot that I agree with (though they reference Raimi's Spider-Man 2 as the high water mark for Marvel films, which, y'all know how I feel about that). Hearing someone other than me rank Guardians 2 at the top, & someone else speak very fondly of Iron Man 3, was fun. And, I think they're both where I am in regards to the MCU right now.

I just wish, in their talk of what's exciting about the Joker film, they'd also talked some about Sony's movie plans. With Fox now under Disney, Sony's the one place that movies like Logan, Joker, & Sony's own recent Spider-Verse film can happen with Marvel IP, until Kevin Feige mixes up his strategy.

Griffins great. Blank Check with him and David Sims is one of the funniest/most informative movie podcasts I listen to. They're going through the whole MCU on their Patreon right now.

Last year my wife and I decided that we wanted to watch the Marvel movies. We’ve been working our way through and just finished Infinity War. We just have Ant Man & The Wasp and Captain Marvel left. My hope is to be able to see End Game opening night and I can’t wait.

Very much so. I had been ranking them when we first started but now I’m not sure. I think my favorites are the Captain America’s and Black Panther. I really enjoyed the Thors and Spider-Man more than I expected.

I do know that I just don’t like Iron Man. Haha.

Infinity War was awesome. I got chills a few times.

I assume you mean movies, so in no particular order

    Winter Soldier
    Infinity War
    Black Panther
    Spider-Man: Homecoming
    Thor

It’s tough though. Ive really enjoyed pretty much all of them. It’s also made me want to read the actual comics so I just started the Winter Soldier series by Brubaker.

The Brubaker Captain America stuff is so good, @EarthShifts.

When you get through that era, the next best Cap stuff, imo, is the current run by Ta-Nehisi Coates. Which, I think there's just one collected volume of it out so far; it's been going for less than a year. It plays off of the whole controversial Hydra Cap aftermath, which had a great premise & mediocre at best execution. Which, part of me wishes that era were immediately forgotten forever, but at the same time, having someone like Ta-Nehisi Coates play around w/ those ideas is totally worth it.

If you ever want more comic recs, check out the Comic Book Thread if you haven't already! (I don't think I've seen you in there yet? Could be wrong.) We welcome people with any level of comic experience, or lack thereof.

Seeing as Natalie Portman has no interest in the MCU (and her character was pretty weak), and Hemsworth's contract has got to be nearing its end, this is my official vote for Valkyrie to take over the mantel of "Thor" when it comes time for a change.

Yea, I think part of it is due to the fact that I had super low expectations for that movie going in. I have really enjoyed all 3 Thor’s, but that one still sticks with me a bit because it was the first.

    What are your 5?

Thank you! I will definitely check it out. I am a complete novice when it comes to pretty much anything comic related.

I'm honestly not all that interested in the idea of "Thor" as a mantle that gets passed down.

The Jane Foster stuff was dope because Jason Aaron told a specific, very compelling story with it, one that worked through his complicated feelings on religion & faith. It was all about exploring what made Jane worthy & what made Odinson an unworthy god, with a parallel storyline of someone dealing with cancer. That great story, coupled with fantastic art from Russell Dauterman (w/ really good fill-in artists for shorter arcs here & there), made Jane Foster Thor a stellar run of comics.

But, personally, if it's not in service of that story, I'd rather not see Thor's name turned into a mantle. And, with the kind of story we got in Ragnarok, I'm not sure that story even fits in the existing MCU mythos. So, I'd rather see Valkyrie pushed to the forefront as her own great character.

Funny enough, while I don't want to see the most successful recent mantle change adapted by Marvel Studios... I would love to see Sam Wilson Captain America adapted. Those comics weren't great (though the initial arc by Rick Remender & Stuart Immonen was decent), but I think the premise is ripe for some great MCU stories, & Anthony Mackie would make a great Captain America. I'd compare it to Disney's live action remakes: The best one so far is Jungle Book, which was actually partly because there was a lot to improve on from the animated classic. The upcoming Aladdin, on the other hand, looks really misguided so far.

I gave you my 8 so Ill just do a top 10 lol
    1. Infinity War
    2. Winter Soldier
    3. Guardians
    4. Ragnarok
    5. Iron Man
    6. Avengers
    7. Civil War
    8. Thor
    9. Guardians 2
    10. Captain America

Legit tho theres about 6 or 7 below that I also really really like on basically equal level as The First Avenger for different reasons. It just depends on the day what takes that 10 spot lol Like you said Ive pretty much enjoyed all of them. Only two I havent liked are Dark World and (unfortunately) Captain Marvel, but theres a still things I liked in each.

I rewatched Thor the other night for the first time in a very long time, and I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. Had always put it near the bottom of my rankings, but I hold it in higher regard now. Not sure if it’d crack my top 10, but certainly liked it more than I remembered.

And I can definitely, confidently declare the Dark World forever sucks, though. It’s a shame that Natalie wasn’t into it; I would have loved to had seen Jane take up the Thor mantle, but fuck it — Valkyrie is better, and if she takes his place, I’m more than cool with that.
