Either a plant or a buy-on band for sure.

I think the Paramore example is a little bit more egregious actually, from what I recall Atlantic signed Hayley before the band ever even formed (I don't think the rest of the members even signed deals). FOB definitely milled around the scene with things like EOWYG before Island set up the upstream thing for TTYG.

Obviously both critical bands for this scene though, so kind of goes to show that the "plant" element doesn't matter a ton.

Honestly love everything they’ve put out since as well. Not for everyone, but definitely some good tracks in their discography

Sleep Signals bought the Atreyu tour for 36k. Not sure who’s investing that much in such a generic band if they’re not a plant

Ya I could give two fucks which bands are "plants" and which aren't as long as the music is good. Sounds like the same pointless criticism that punk bands that signed to majors in the '90's got.

Was not aware of that. I enjoyed Beat Union's album back in the day.

Plenty of bands buy on tours, though. Remember Drive A? That band bought on every tour imaginable and went nowhere. Sandlot Heroes bought on that Yellowcard/The Wonder Years tour seven years ago and went nowhere. Affiance bought on that Killswitch Engage/AILD/Miss May I tour back in 2013 and went nowhere. The only difference is that Affiance was already signed to a label. I doubt an independent record label will drop that much cash to get a band on tour. That's coming straight from the band's pocket.

My understanding is that the whole "buy-on" thing is pretty common practice. I'd imagine it can be pretty profitable for some bands/labels too especially if there's multiple bands wanting to open a tour and willing to negotiate the opportunity.

And actually: Isn't that exactly how the second stage at OzzFest always worked?

Wasn't Ice Nine Kills basically a buy on band at one point? They seem to be doing well now.

Saw them with Atreyu and I totally agree.

Pretty much. I am unsure if it was that way from the beginning or how much the price changed over the years, but I do believe by the mid-2000s the slots cost in the $75,000 ballpark.

Fronz and Frankie of Emmure squashed their beef and were talking about touring together on Twitter. Attila asked on Facebook a couple weeks who wants another Rage Fest this summer could see Emmure being on it.

I'm sure all 250 people per city that went last year are stoked

Culture Abuse date just popped up in Boston (June 21st @ Middle East). Guessing there's a tour on the way.

EDIT: Scratch that. BandsInTown deleted it.

According to @maryp1603 / Bandsintown, a Chicago date popped up as well.

Tonight Our Last Night said they'll be back in November for a headliner. There's that for those who care.

Well, that's fun news! Looks like we should be anticipating a tour announcement soon (probably a headliner).

It was 75k per band except the non rotating bands, bus or equivalent required aswell as ozzfest kept 75%(or close to) of merch! That’s why you saw so many bands doing somewhat bigger tours opening and they would do ozzfest and get dropped.

Beat union were a band that got a lot of shit back in the day when they formed. They formed out of the remains of an awesome band called Farse and when the singer left to become a hairdresser the other members formed beat union. They were on every ska/punk tour in the uk, I saw them live 7/8 times in their first year without actually going to see them specifically. Then they released their first album produced by Jon Feldman and got on warped tour. All within a year of forming.
