The original Star Wars trilogy is pretty damn close for me too, because I love all 3 of them as well. If Episode IX is as good as I am hoping it is going to be, that is going to be an unparalleled run of 6 movies for me between the OT and the Sequel trilogy.

Return of the King is still a really good movie, but for me, Fellowship of the Ring is a goddamned classic, The Two Towers isn't quite as good, and ROTK is a little bit worse than TTT. I really feel like the ridiculous success of the first film and the trilogy as a whole allowed Peter Jackson to indulge his worst instincts as a filmmaker while they were completing the final two films. While they were under the gun for the first one they did the best.

 

How about this. Of everybodys favorite movies of all time, which Star Wars are up there for you? Because Im a nerd I do have a list on letterboxd lol As Ive said TLJ is in my top 5 (I treat it as a tier so its equal to Braveheart, Lion King, Deathly Hallows, and Fellowship of the Ring). Then my next tier of 6-10 has A New Hope, Empire, and TFA along with Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Into The Wild. So thats 4 in my top 10. I still love ROTJ and it has my favorite Star Wars moment but its only in my top 50.

How about everybody else?

Empire is probably the only one in my top 10, maybe even top 20 tbh

 

If the standard for the third movie is "as good as or better than" the rest, as opposed to just better than the rest, then the OT and the prequels count for sure. Also yeah I'll echo LOTR and obviously Toy Story and Apes.

 

We have remarkably similar taste in films, with the exception of Deathly Hallows.

All of original trilogy of Star Wars films would make my list, plus TLJ. The LOTR movies would too.

 

if the whole ewok sequence in Jedi didnt exist it may be better than Empire

I absolutely LOVED The Battle for Endor as a kid.

 

1st and 3rd act of ROTJ are both on line with the greatness of IV and V. the second act kind of drags a bit for me. I dont dislike the Ewoks and actually would probably fall on the side of liking them but that second act with getting on Endor to the point where Luke leaves I just think isnt on par with the rest of the movie.

I'll echo the sentiments about LOTR, Planet of the Apes, the OT, Toy Story, and Indiana Jones. I can't think of too many others though. I'm very hopeful that John Wick 3 will end up on that list too.

In terms of how many Star Wars movies are in my top five, Empire is my favorite movie ever, so that pretty much says all you need to know. Star Wars is probably in my top 10 or 15. I can't decide on where TLJ falls yet, but it'll end up pretty high. Outside of Empire though, I'd have a really hard time actually trying to figure out my top five favorite movies.

Also, the last few times I've watched ROTJ I've softened my Ewok criticism. Loved them as kids, found them a little annoying as I grew older and now I enjoy them again. AND, they really don't hold their own that much against the empire outside of the initial surprise. They are really getting their asses handed to them until Chewie steals a walker.

 

Ewoks are great. I like the way their teeth look and the voice/singing is cute as hell.

This discussion convinced me to start a letterboxd account and now I'm trying to remember every movie I've ever seen.

 

I think about how someone out there says that Episode II is their favorite movie of all time, and it makes me laugh.

 

I have fan-edited versions of all 3 SW prequel films and they are all really good.
