I have two dogs. My biggest pet peeve is when my students narc on each other for dumb reasons and stir up drama because they can’t exist outside of a world of unbalanced chaos. The moment things return to equilibrium, I know I am moments away from someone disrupting it, throwing all peaceful notions that I but glimpsed down the proverbial drain to ne’er shine again.

Teaching the right group of kids can be great. Out of 4 years of teaching, I’ve had one reasonably ok class.

Yes

 

I just wish they would stop touching kids. I feel like there's a new headline every month about that.

But yeah, pay them more and do more to protect kids for sure.

While we're at it, don't give them guns.

Yes but I don’t see it happening in our country anytime soon, though I’d certainly welcome it. For a job you typically can’t get without a minimum of a bachelor level degree, it’s among the lowest paying. I tend to not complain though because summers off are the actual shit.

 

I teach with someone on my team that believes teachers should be armed. He also has a bunch of conservative proganda stickers on his bookshelves/cabinets in his room that make me roll my eyes.

 

Yeah summers off are great but still underpaid.

Although I think almost everybody should be paid more starting with public school teachers and moving all the way through every industry stopping at the executive level.

 

@oncenowagain are the teachers unions in Florida worth anything? In Texas they're practically worthless and going on strike is illegal haha.

Absolutely. I hate when people argue that we can’t increase the pay service industry workers more because they should then also get paid more. Like...no shit, supporting causes that better the income for one industry sets a precedent that others will then be pressured to follow. Let’s get everybody paid.

 

Our union has its perks and I became a member the first year I started teaching. But our collective bargaining agreement that my county, as well as all other counties in FL are beholden to, don’t allow for teachers to strike. Our unions negotiate for the educators, but the optics of their engagements with the various school boards suggest that they often don’t work all that hard to fight as hard as they could.
