Well I just think he should’ve waited out his PIT contract if he really wanted to have freedom to decide where to sign. That’s what a mature professional would have done. They didn’t bring up the trade, he did.

Demanding an immediate trade, you better be ready to accept what a trade is - being sold to WHATEVER team pays the most at that time. That’s all I’m saying. Sometimes having leverage to make your own call takes patience. Imo he demanded something he wasn’t actually ready to accept

If Antonio Brown had no off-field issues, and the conflicts between his teammates and himself were minor enough, there should be absolutely no issue with him demanding a trade and then attempting to control his destination. So the core issue remains one I support. Now, throw in all of Brown’s antics and serious off-field issues, Pittsburgh has to deal with Brown’s personality, which is a reality for any team attempting to trade someone, like the Patriots with Gronk. It’s not their fault but it’s their reality. And Brown has to deal with the repercussions of all this as well. He’ll have to deal with Pittsburgh being unable or now unwilling to trade him, or cutting him, and potentially facing a limited market for his services because of all the shit he’s pulling. So yeah, that’s a clusterfuck of his own making and he’s a total dickhole. But the specific act of threatening not to play if he’s traded to a team he doesn’t want to play for, that’s a precedent I support.

I ultimately never had a problem with Bell never showing up because he wasn’t under contract, and the franchise tag is bullshit

You don’t want to be here even though you’re under contract? Okay, that’s shitty but I get it. But you’re also going to publicly shit on the team that’s trying to trade you? And try to pick where you go? Maybe I’m just biased, but it’s hard for me to agree with where he’s coming from

He could also just be getting terrible terrible advice from someone you never know. I think he’ll be fine on his next team

Also, Brown prior to this by numerous, numerous accounts has been a positive locker room guy, or so it seemed. And he’s one of the hardest workers in the league, bar none. I get the recent character concerns, but let’s keep the full picture in mind.

Hypothetical: say Calvin Johnson, instead of retiring, was sick of the Lions losing and demanded a trade. Model human being. No off-field issues. Respected teammate. If the Lions tried to trade him to the at the time 3-13 Browns, if hypothetically that’s where they’d get the most value back in a trade, and he said he wouldn’t show up to camp if the Lions made that trade, I don’t see why anyone would have an issue with that. That’s why the “you demanded a trade, take what you can get” argument doesn’t hold up to me.

I mean, pelicans fans at least temporarily resent AD, from what I’ve seen online lol

If we're talking about leverage though AD has more leverage than anyone. He could tell the Pelicans he'd rather play hockey and they'd have to start teaching the rest of the team how to skate.

Eh, it’s just nice to see players finish their contract and choose their next team the right way. But I understand if people don’t blame a player for seeking early exits from a contract, considering on the other side, its typical for teams to cut players before their contract is up

Also it’s little odd to compare NBA players to this, part of the reason they have so much more leverage is because stars dictate what happens in the league. AB is a helpful piece but he’s not gonna turn every team into a contender

Yeah definitely, NBA players are closer to their on-court production in vacuums than NFL players are, and are less team-reliant

BUT I think that's also a good argument as to why AB should be able to control his own destiny IN A WAY

Like I think Calvin is a good example for both arguments. Yeah no one would have been mad if he demanded a trade - but what actually happened, is he retired a Lion rather than cause that drama. Because he was truly selfless and cared about what he meant to Lions fans, and the franchise that paid him crazy money in the first place. His contract outlasted his drive to play football, so he retired. Class act.

I’m mad at the Jags for not letting Fred Taylor retire a Jaguar, as an opposite example. He was a total class act and deserved a nice sunset to his career where he was committed to one team. He gave his body up for us, being seriously injured several times. And we just traded him to a team that didn’t let him play out his last juice / rise up in the record books.

Calvin retired because he didn't want to hurt his brain anymore, don't think it had much to do with the the franchise itself, he was critical of them on the way out

Maybe AB doesn’t want to let the Steelers do him like they did Polamalu, I guess I can’t blame him for that

I thought polamalu was overpaid? At least that's how I remember steelers fans phrasing it

They just didn’t want to re-sign him, he wanted to play but not for anyone else. He kind of retired against his will and distanced himself from football for a while, and definitely the franchise

Polamalu was injured every year for a few years, it was sad but he was done and was never going to get a big deal from another team. I'm not sure if he could've adapted to the league becoming so pass dominant either.

That’s true, he lost his step after those last few seasons. But with the trash we trotted out in the secondary I still feel like he would’ve been good to have around, at least for leadership/mentor ship
