Chargers can easily have enough to get earl thomas, they have more pressing needs tho

Dak is....not the worst quarterback? Phew. I did it!

What’s impressive to me is that Wentz and Watson are putting up similar efficiency numbers but with higher volume. Like those two teams can’t really run so the passing game is what carries them.

Wentz and Watson are both real young to be legitimately very good, team leading QBs already.

Yeah im not sure why people keep mocking safeties to LAC. Phillips emerged and looked great last year next to Derwin James. I think safety and RB are the positions LAC needs the LEAST lol

Watson wasn't leaned on all that much more than the other guys though. Watson averaged 32 passing attempts a game, Dak and Goff were 29 and 30.

Now Wentz was at 36 per game, so that's a good chunk more but had the worse team record of the four. Weird.

Memories are nice, but that's all they are. Prestigious

Watson not being leaned on had more to do with BoB running Lamar into a wall constantly I feel like

I just checked and Dak ran about 4.6 times per game and Watson did 6.3 times per game.

So Dak has the ball in his hands, passing or rushing, about 34 times per game and Watson is at 38.

What's sad is even though the Jags are UPGRADING at QB we still can't be in this conversation lolol

I think most volume stats at the end of the year really throws off peoples' perspectives. Someone could have like 75 more attempts and 500 more yards at the end of the year, but that's only like 3-5 plays per game difference, which is nearly nothing.

@CarpetElf I never thought about it this way, but when the Jags have good years (good secondary, run stopping front 7, no QB, REALLY heavy on the running game) they are literally the LSU of the NFL lol

I look at it the opposite way. Small differences in usage make a world of difference in the long run. Likewise, a little moderation goes a long way. Those 4 attempts could be the difference between the Cowboys easily converting 3rd & short on the ground, and the Texans still needing Watson to complete a pass in that situation.

You only call 50-60 plays per game. So the difference between a run-heavy and a pass-heavy attack is only about 7-10 plays. Like, 32 rushes vs 25 passes is a run-heavy attack. And so that subtle difference entirely changes the way the DC calls plays.

The Cowboys with their run-heavy attack are always going to give Dak more man-to-man looks, and they are always going to get linebackers to bite on play action & bootlegs. Even if Elliott gets hurt or has an off-day that's still what their opponents gameplanned for that week.

I don't understand your point. I could say the same thing and put any two quarterbacks' names in there and it wouldn't matter.

In the regular season only, DAL averaged 60 plays per game at a 33/27 pass/rush split. HOU is at 61 plays per game at a 32/30 pass/rush split.

Everything in football is a ripple effect response to really small details. Yes I think Dak even touching the ball 4-5 times fewer per game than Watson, over the course of seasons of film study and habits and ways that the Texans succeed vs ways that the Cowboys succeed, does make a noticeable difference in the long run regarding how aggressively teams gameplan against them.

If anything, I'm getting surprised how much Dak had the ball in his hands much more than I expected on a per game basis. We've kind of transitioned from a rush-first team into a Dak-first (whether he passes or runs) team over the past year. Pretty awesome.

Averages are a lot more sensitive to context than you’d think too.

A lot of people see “oh only 3-4 times more per game” but that doesn’t actually mean it’s always a measly 3-4 more times every game. In practice, that small difference in “average attempts” usually means that the player with more attempts, will have 40 and 50 attempt games more often, like say 4 or 5 of them in a season, while the other guy stays at a healthy 25-30 and rarely becomes the focal point of the game plan.

These numbers are getting pretty crazy. Dak had the ball in his hands on 62.3% of all plays in the regular season. Watson was at 61.8%.

This is honestly an amazing argument to fire both Bill O'Brien and Scott Linehan
