GOD DAMN THIS IS GREAT NEWS. Was not expecting a quick turnaround.

    Sleep Well Beast
might be their best front-to-back record for me, although it's like picking out your favorite cookie if all the cookies were amazing and delicious.

The name is also the opposite of my favorite track on Trouble Will Find Me and I can see them playing this new single and "Hard to Find" back to back.

I only realised this the other day, but I have liked each National album less than its predecessor ever since Alligator. I would still rank their releases Alligator>Boxer>High Violet>Trouble Will Find Me>Sleep Well Beast. But I genuinely like them all. Sleep Well Beast is just SUCH a mood record for me (even compared with their others) that I don't play it much. It's still good though. I don't think they could get much further down the 'downtrodden, weary middle-aged man' rabbit hole than Sleep Well Beast, so I look forward to this seemingly new direction.

My expectations after Trouble Will Find Me were unrealistically high (as that's one of my favorite albums released in recent memory), so Sleep Well Beast did not stick with me very well. Maybe my expectations are just a little lower this time around, but after first listen I like this more than most off the last one.

  12. all the women voices being added to this is going to be an incredible dimension to this band's songwriting - the vocals from
Gail Ann Dorsey brought me to my knees

I’ll be honest here, I never gave SWB much of a chance. I was extremely hyped. Trouble Will Find Me is my favorite National album, as well as one of my favorite records in general.

This one never grabbed me. I wanted to love it, but I kind of just stopped listening after a little bit and never returned.

Based on the comments here, I’m thinking I should revisit it.

Either way, I absolutely love this new single and I’m very excited.

  19. And why not the title track while we're at it? Glad we could agree the back half is flawless

I think it's an album best listened to in reverse. The normal tracklisting is great, but it really CLICKS if you start with the "back half" being your intro, as all the above posts note. No idea why that is. But give it a shot. It's truly a masterpiece.

Cool to hear of another person who's favorite track from that is "Hard To Find." I can't tell you how many times I've listened to that song.
