I heard Pusha T's live set once (outside a SXSW showcase that was sold out) and he did not sound good live and it bummed me out

I wonder if that's still the case but I'll never know unless he plays a venue with seats

I remember when Lupe Fiasco was the most exciting new rapper, back before Food & Liquor came out. That's probably right around the end of when I was up on new hip hop

@ChaseTx bringing up killer mike made me think of this. I didn’t know you were anti him or RTJ because of that.
    But regardless
My persuasion and media prof is a grad student so she’s my age and she always slips casual intersectional feminism into our lessons and I’m literally always like YES QUEEN PREACH and have been like omg I want to be friends with her after class is done

Well the other day she brought up the current prison system and she said what are some of the things people are saying? And I said, “that it’s modern day slavery” and she was like well we’re NOT going to call it that, don’t do that oh my god it’s such a gross disservice to the atrocities of actual slavery that happened in this country and I was like uhhh and she was like it’s like when people say academic lynching, it’s just NOT okay blah blah and I was so like taken aback that I couldn’t respond properly (because I rly did NOT like to be told “don’t say that”) but what I WOULD have said was “I understand where you’re coming from and agree with it normally, and I would never ever say ‘academic lynching’ or ‘witch hunt’ because I completely understand the concept and why it’s wrong however in this case this is an argument that black activists who are advocating for prison reform are using directly and I just feel like I’m being a good ally by lifting up those arguments and beliefs?

Anyway if anyone has thoughts I’m open to them

Who are you a fan of that you absolutely wouldn’t be a fan of if you heard them for the first time today? To make it more challenging, try to only list artists that you still currently listen to

For me, probably stuff like blink-182, all time low, etc

Yeah I thought Killer Mike was cool politically because he supported Bernie in 2016, but then following him on IG it got to the point where he was always posting about 2A and how black people should all own guns because of white supremacist government tyranny and it was the exact same arguments far right people use, just marketed toward POC. I honestly started to believe he might be a paid NRA spokesperson. So yeah not cool with him

Have you watched 13th on Netflix? It's Ava Duvernay's documentary about how the prison system is just a means of legalized slavery. It spells out all the institutional structures that set POC up to become imprisoned and the value that has for the prison industrial complex. I get what your professor is saying by not wanting to compare anything to slavery though. It's just a factually accurate comparison that a lot of people don't think about

It’s something I think about occasionally. If I heard some of my favorite albums of all time for the first time today, would they still end up being my favorite albums?

I guess I just do try to understand his perspective (even tho I don’t agree with it) because I’m not a POC talking about a hypothetical world where the only people who have guns are the ones who have proven to be killing them regularly.

I haven’t watched yet but exactly that’s the argument I was making (or struggling to make). She said something like “but yes the being forced to work without pay” and I was like “that’s...what slavery is...”
I get what she’s saying from a language professor way but like...a holocaust is a word and meant things not just referring to the German Jewish holocaust. Similarly the word slavery means more than just the US’s intimate history with it.
Furthermore I wanted to be like it’s not JUST the work without pay, it’s the work without pay DIRECTLY correlating with black people being sentenced more severely, arrested more etc etc
Like when you put those two things together and you have black activists saying “this is fucked up, this is a new form of slavery” I don’t think a white language professor should be like “you shouldn’t say that”

Yeah I did try to look at it from that perspective, he's absolutely right that black men especially are targeted by police and the government is white supremacist, but also I don't think guns are going to protect anyone from cops. Also he would post all the same reactionary bullshit after school shootings to keep people from supporting anti-gun legislation. It just doesn't gel with me.

You should definitely watch the documentary, it's the most depressing thing I've ever watched

Like 2 or 3 years ago my dumbass city thought it'd be cool to book J. Cole at like a 100 cap frat bar/venue :crylaugh: They immediately had to scramble when like 1000+ people showed up and book him at a 1300 cap venue. He prolly could've played the civic center.

tldr; I should be in charge of all Tallahassee music booking.
