Marianas Trench - Phantoms (March 1, 2019) Album • Page 4

  1. I'd argue against that in every way. There's maybe three songs that could be held up to my least favorite on Ever After. I don't even think most of these get to Astoria level. The first half of the album is very weak and no where near what they're capable of ... to the point where they feel like just phoned in versions of what they're best at. I can't believe they thought "Only the Lonely" was a #2 track. It's just bad.

  2. I love how creative that entire album is. That's what this album's missing. It's not very creative aside from the last half of the penultimate track and the closer. Lots of pretty basic modern pop song stuff here. I'm disappointed in that.

  3. I miss the creative vocal patterns. Hell, Set It Off had more fun with the vocals in their latest album.

Understandable! That's always been my favorite part of this band; their ability to be insanely creative while still making catchy as hell pop music.

Oh and the harmonies. Love the harmonies.

  6. Exactly.

    That's ... why I'm disappointed.

It's a pretty good pop album. It's not peak MT good though.

I'll listen tonight and come back with my report!

  8. They really rely on the "oh oh oh oh" chorus thing on this album that every band was doing back during Paramore's "Now" success.

  9. "Glimmer" sure is great.

Listened to this once. Hard to say my opinions on it. A lot to digest.

Biggest thing I can say is I wish they took more chances like The killing kind and Wish You Were Here

Yup! Echoes of You, Wish You Were Here, Glimmer, Death of Me, and The Killing Kind are all great!

The rest are fine. Your Ghost might be my least favorite MT song.

I wish Eleonora was longer too, but it sounds awesome.

Man. If they would have made the intro track as long as the usual openers that could have been super special. I’m about half way through the album and at first listen it doesn’t touch their previous stuff but I’m still enjoying it a lot. I’m not sure they can do any wrong/bad.

I mean tbh that’s basically where I’m at too. About half the album for me is on par (or nearly on par) with their past stuff, and the other half is okay.

I was enjoying my first listen fine enough, thinking it was perfectly solid pop music, until "The Killing Kind." Now I really wish they had made the whole album in that aesthetic vein.

It would have suited the haunted house theme better, plus that is the one track on here that I feel is the band firing on all cylinders and is wholly "them" in terms of fucking going for it. I still enjoy the rest of the album and think it's good (Glimmer, Echoes of You and Don't Miss Me? are great) but it feels like a missed opportunity a little bit.

Josh said at one moment in the Q&A fit the listening party that his favorite part is mixing because he spends day and night thinking of the songs, and someone else comes in woth a fresh set of ears. I think Josh needs to take a step back and have someone else produce next time around, to try to push him to generate new ideas, and someone to give him the confidence to fucking go for it. As MT fans we know what he’s capable of and trust him in a wildly different vibe, aesthetic

God. Chills all over at the 3 minute mark of the killing kind. Almost two decades of hearing those notes from him.

And yes....there’s nothing else on the album that comes even close to the killing kind. The MP3 and Astoria closers are still better in my opinion but this is quite good.

Doing my first listen through. I would love to have seen Eleonora fleshed out further. Only the Lonely Survive and Echoes of You are both great songs still.

I’m on my 2nd listen and unfortunatley I’m pretty disappointed thus far. I wouldn’t call any of this bad but it just doesn’t reach the heights of what they have shown to be capable of in the past. A lot of the choruses are falling flat for me, too repetitive. I really dont like that they broke their format here and omitted both an epic opener and a pen ultimate piano track. There’s definitely some jams here though, I’m hoping it will grown on me but this is the first time that an MT album hasn’t immediately hooked me from the opener.
