Anyone else hitting up Hunahpu's Day next weekend in Tampa?

 

I'm not going but I know some great Jersey breweries are. Make sure you check out Icarus and Kane while you're there!

 

Kane is killing me bringing all this awesome shit to fests and never tapping it at the brewery.

 

Right? The list of what they're bringing sounds so good what the hell.

 

The Bird one is a Horus collab from awhile ago that they got label approval on and have already put on untappd, so hopefully those bottles are coming soon. The German cake one I don't have a clue about. And the ANTEAD variants have to just be getting adjunct'd in the keg, so they're just holding out on us there.

 

They all sound cool but I'm a huge German chocolate cake fan so I want that bad.

 

I haven't had Younger before, but I've had Elder a few times. Coming from someone who isn't the biggest fan of IPA's, I would say it's an extremely well-made and balanced double IPA. In my opinion, not really a beer that will knock your socks off (at least not anymore, I know times have changed). I guess it just depends what you're looking for.

 

I feel like I should have it just to have it, but not sure how much I’ll enjoy it.

Side note, I’m in Portland, ME for the night and at an awesome beer bar. Finally had my first true lambic, Drie Fonteinen Oude Geuze, and it was so fantastic. My wife had a Berliner from Germany and it was amazing as well. The sourness was much more subtle and subdued compared to the local ones I’ve had around here. Also having an Oxbow saison rose that is great.

 

Are you at Novare Res? I went there for the first time this past weekend and loved it. If not, you should check it out.

 

I am there, and it may be my favorite place in the world.

 

IMO, no. It’s a very dated IPA but is too malt heavy for my liking when I had it a couple of years ago.

 

Enjoy it! Incredible selection and atmosphere, good vegan bratwurst too if that’s your thing. I already have plans to go back on Saturday haha.

Is that fun, though? It’s just putting the beer in the wrong category. If that’s their IG joke then cool but untappd is also a resource. I’m not out here like *pushes up glasses* “I’m sorry your porter has roasted barley in it so it must be called a stout!”

But, I dunno, I don’t see the reason behind it?

 

Funky Buddha is cool but I can’t go when I visit home because it’s crawling with everyone I ever met in high school that still lives there, it’s too much lol

Also, @Matt, it’s not a brewery but Lazerwolf in FTL is great from what I remember.

 

I think the owner (who is a super nice dude, probably younger than me) has a bit of a “fuck beer purists” attitude because before he even opened one of the pre-boom craft breweries (that makes shit beer) in the state decided he needed to public shit on him because his beer was hazy and “pretentiously” named. So I think it was just born out of that.

I’d agree with the untappd as a resource thing if they were a bigger brewery, but they are a super small operation with a ton of diehard fans selling out any release instantly, so they don’t exactly have casual fans that aren’t in on the joke.

 

I’d hardly call myself a beer purist, I’m more just worn out that the only way to survive as a brewery these days is to live off of filled to the brim pictures of NEIPA’s that are just shades of gray in differences in flavor profiles or by making sours. NEIPA’s are valid. I enjoy drinking them and they are legit possibly the hardest styles of beer to make. But at some point it’s like c’mon. But, also, these complaints I have are more lodged with consumers than breweries. I’m all for goofy names and ribbing the industry that takes itself entirely too seriously, but I take labeling pretty seriously and mislabeling a beer — intentionally — as a different style is, IMO, gatekeeping in a way. My brother sees session IPA and orders it because he doesn’t want to drink beers higher than 7%. But he’d order that troon at 9% and not know any different. Then again, he’s not likely to order a troon-sized brewery’s beer, now that I think about it.

And I’d disagree on your second point. Troon are 19th highest rated brewery in untappd in America (around 25 if you count the meaderies ahead of them which I don’t). Of those other 18 breweries ahead of them, only seven have more check ins on untappd. Obviously, not the end all, be all, but still. They have good traction. Enough that if I were still in my days of scoping out top rated breweries on untappd I would’ve been in here asking about them.

Lastly, it’s just not funny. Make fun of the pretentiousness or beverage — after all, it’s there to be drank, not idolized — but at least be funny. High alcohol beer called a session isn’t funny, IMO.

I understand why people are tired of certain styles, but as you said, that’s on consumers. I’m not going to fault a brewery for making what sells. Especially a brewery with limited production. And for what it’s worth, Troon definitely isn’t the fill to the brim IG post type, haha. I totally get where you’re coming from on labeling, but at the end of the day, an adult should be able to see 9% next to a beer and not think they can drink a bunch of them, beer novice or not.

I wouldn’t read much into untappd rankings. I’m glad Troon is doing well there, because I think they deserve it, but those rankings have always been a joke. 3 Sons is #3 on the list and literally opened last week. You can’t get Troon unless you happen to get one of a couple hundred surprise release crowlers or go to the restaurant I was at tonight. It just isn’t falling into the hands of people that don’t know what it is.

As far as the joke itself, to each his own. I absolute understand your thinking, but there are few things I hate more than people in the beer world taking themselves too seriously, so any kind of fuck you to that is good in my book. In a world of dumb shit like Troon v that old school asshole here I was talking about or Tired Hands v the Alstrom brothers, I come down firmly on the “beer should be fun” side of things.

 

Stop trying to make me like Ariana Grande.
