Max vs Tony would be amazing as both fighters fight confidently and it would be fireworks. Conor vs Tony is a great match up that was meant to happen awhile back as well.

I think the overdue part of the Lightweight division right now is Tony fighting for the title and Khabib’s return. Dustin needs a solid win over a top contender and so does Max at lightweight. Conor lost at his last shot. Cerrone just fell back into the loop. Iaquinta needs to face someone ranked top 3 imo.

Either way, another exciting year of possibilities and next week’s card is potentially card of the year if all the fights hold up.

I am also much more confused and wondering what happens at featherweight next. Does José fight for an interim title against Volkanovski? Ortega? Or does Volkanovski face Frankie? Does Zabit get an interim or straight up title shot after he beats Stephens? Does Max defend?

    Zabit vs Ortega?
    Jose vs Zabit?
    Edgar vs Holloway?
    Volkanovski vs Zabit?
    Yair Rodriguez?

Herb Dean's kicking himself for stoping that early.

  5. God damn. Unless you make Santos fight someone like Gus first, then he should get the next shot at Jones.

Jan was ranked #4 in the divison and Santos was sitting at #6. So with Santos moving up the only people ahead of him would be Smith (who he finished at 185 a year ago) and Gus.

My guy is starting to put people out while running backwards.

I'm secretly praying for a timeline where we get Smith vs Santos 2 for UFC 240 lol

  7. In Smith's defense, that loss to Santos suddenly looks a lot better since Thiago is just finishing everyone.

8-1 now in his last 9 fights and 11 out of his 13 UFC wins are by knockout lmao.

Think they could get Jones to fight in Brazil?

Struve also announced his retirement tonight. Sad to see him go but happy he’s happy with his last win. He’s only 31 and plans to teach mma now.

  9. Struve is one of the biggest ‘what if’s’ ever.

His health problems aside, he never really put it all together.

I wonder how good he could’ve been if he knew how to use his size/range better. If someone would’ve taught him a better jab that would’ve been fucked up.

Both guys have been underrated. It’s kind of cool watching of them rise up through the ranks at the same time. Two average Middleweights jumping up to the top of the Light Heavyweight division lol

Side note, this was a sneaky fun card. I love these events that aren’t right in the middle of my Saturday night.

I don’t care for Danis, but I’m also confused as to why he got suspended/fined unless he was found to be instigating from cageside? 7 months for what seemed to be self-defense imo is a bit extreme.

That Woodley/Askren interview is great. I do wonder if he’ll decide to retire soon after he sweeps Usman under the rug. (My prediction)

  18. he should def retire on top. there’s no way dana gives him rematch if he loses the title (unlikely imo)

i do hope he sticks around after usman to bury colby

Quite liked the bit where Woodley was like “GSP doesn’t need to fight me for his legacy. I need to fight him for mine”

My immediate reaction (like everyone else's) is to say this is probably a result of CTE, but I've also always heard both Hughes brothers were huge bullies and assholes (especially growing up) so I don't know how much sympathy I can really give him for the train scenario.

This thread goes into some of the admissions from Hughes' book. Terrible stuff.

If you were wondering what GSP meant by how he never liked hearing how "other fighters" treated their fans, he was 100% including this guy in that comment. I was a Hughes fan growing up. When I was very ignorant to what I would read he would say to people, as well as had a huge lack of understanding of what those undertones represented for him as a person.

I found the reddit thread where I had a lot more exposed to me about Hughes and some things he's done. Including, but not limited to, "Torturing small animals, picking on those weaker than others, looking down his nose at just about every single fighter there is, physically and verbally assaulting his parents, pedophilia, sexual assault, and encompassing actions and an attitude that can only be described as general douchebaggery."

There was a follow up to this post asking "What the... Pedophilia?"
To which another poster responded "The guy made out with an 8th grader while he was in college. Granted he didn't have sex with her, so it's not considered statutory rape, but that's definitely in the range of pedophilia."

Watching that Askren, Woodley interview. Love everything about Askren, excited to watch him for the first time in a few weeks. What's everyones opinion on Woodley? I definitely think he is talented but I always felt like he was an asshole.

I had iffy vibes about him roughly 2 years ago in regards to how he felt things should be for him as a champion, when he had only been the champ for a few months. Came to a draw with Thompson and had felt like he deserved Conor pay and then started saying he was being treated unfairly based on his color. I am no one to diminish anyone's feelings regarding racism and how it's impacted them, but it was very out of left field and seemingly out of tact with his issues with the UFC. He wasn't being promoted/pushed as a star because, at that point, Woodley hadn't really impressed the masses and he saw it otherwise. I think he just felt having beaten Robbie in the fashion he did, he deserved all this stardom and publicity.

In his first 5 fights in the UFC, he lost two rather uneventful matches to decision, and had 3 early KO/TKO wins. It was really hard to judge the level of fighting he was at, because he was inconsistent (Of course, this is all only my opinion/take on his career. I don't speak nearly as confidently as this reads.)

But, Tyron's personality has changed a bit, and he went on to defend his title 3 times in a year time span against Thompson (again), Maia, and Till. 3 superb challengers whom he had answers for all. I respect him greatly now as the Welterweight champ, and his most recent, dominant, win against a young and undefeated contender (who at one point knocked out 6 people out of 8 in a year.) It definitely put him on a level where I said woah, this guy is 36 and he's acing these fights like a new up and coming prospect. I have full confidence Usman is gonna get a wake up call. He's a good fighter, but he hasn't faced somebody like Woodley yet.

That second Thompson fight was awful if I recall correctly and he cut a shitty promo after that fight about some of the things you were stating. He has been better since then I suppose. I feel like we haven't seen his KO power in a while cause dude has some serious striking power. I know nothing about Usman.

This sport is funny because people will turn against you if you whine too much - even if your complaints are completely justified. Tyron starting to get even shittier treatment from the UFC regarding the whole interim title situation, but then he just kept his mouth shut, accepted the Till fight, and stopped him. Meanwhile, Covington and Usman started running their mouths about their own mistreatment/mismanagement and suddenly all of the fans shifted to Tyron's side. It's just funny how it works like that.
