This whole Microsoft x Nintendo thing is so interesting in terms of where the video game market is possibly heading. We only have three major dedicated platform holders in the industry, and two of them seem to be increasingly interested in doing things differently from how things used to be (Nintendo having left the rat race already, Microsoft apparently following in its footsteps, just differently). I don't know if people realise how huge the implications of that could be for how we play games.

This is true. Of course this exact mindset has backfired for Sony (after the PS2) and Microsoft (after the 360) before. You'd figure they'd learn.

Tbh I thought infinite was better than the first one in almost every way, maybe it’s because I played infinite first

I'm notoriously less into Infinite than many others here, but I do like it, and I also like it more than the other games. That's mostly because I don't like scary stuff, but also because it plays better and because it is so damn pretty. I guess I can see why fans of 1 and 2 don't like it as much though, for much the same reasons.

Infinite definitely played better. I thought Rapture was gorgeous but in most categories (including the twist) I liked Infinite more

Shame. I was hoping Anthem was gonna be a fun Destiny-like.

I just thought infinite’s story was a bit more meaty and had a much bigger pay off

Rapture is gorgeous as a whole but you spend the whole game in dark spaces that are sometimes claustrophobic, but you only sometimes get stunning views and landmarks whereas in infinite it feels much more open and less like you’re just going through corridors the whole time

I think they both have their strengths but I felt like Rapture as an environment is one of the only real strengths of BioShock, where as Columbia is one of MANY strengths of Infinite

I liked looking at Rapture a lot, I liked looking at Columbia a lot too and playing in Columbia a lot more

Yeah I mean none of this is to take away from Bioshock, the game was a 9/10 easily, I just remember liking infinite more but it’s been nearly 6 years, I’ll be playing it again after I play 2 and seeing how it holds up.

All I know about Infinite is that it has a barbershop quartet singing God Only Knows

    must be a 10/10 game

Infinite had better gameplay mechanics than Bioshock 1, but abandoning the weapon wheel in favor of a two-gun-at-a-time system was a huge mistake in my opinion. Made the game less fun for me and made me less attached to the guns. Also made the weapon upgrade system feel really unrewarding, because when you fully upgraded a gun you could only use it for a little while before running out of ammo and having to switch to something else, something that isn't upgraded as much, which was lame. Felt like the placement of weapons and ammo was paced so that you were constantly juggling guns and never sticking with the same one for too long. Don't know what they were thinking there.

As for stories, Infinite is really good but I think I still prefer the comparative simplicity of Bioshock 1. There was no moment in Infinite that hit as hard as that moment in Bioshock 1. But I did enjoy Infinite a lot at the time. Feels like I remember it less and less fondly as time goes on, though.

I just have issues with time travel stories, I just think they always end up shitting the bed somehow, unless of course they are not playing it serious to begin with

I like how I said the Microsoft and Nintendo thing was crazy interesting and people were like "nah, it's not" and now it's totally heading in a groundbreaking direction. It was bound to head this direction if you looked at Microsoft and their statements about the future. They know software is the way to make money and that teaming up with their competition can only help them.

  22. I guess this is a hot take but I haaaaaaate the story of Bioshock Infinite. Its politics are so "both sides are bad, actually" and it completely abandons its opportunity to make a statement in favor of some quantum bullshit that, even at the time, felt to me like a total cop-out from the political narrative it opens with. While I wish the original game went deeper into the failing of Rapture and had more to say about libertarianism as a doomed ideology--which it's clearly playing with but never really *says*--I think Bioshock Infinite took so many steps back in its story when it had the opportunity to really say something.

It's been a while since I've played either. I recently picked up Bioshock 2 on the PS3 for like $4, maybe I should play through that series at some point this year.
