@supernovagirl this is exactly why I almost never go on facebook anymore, basically since my so's father asked him why I was "saying crazy things" on Facebook after Hillary lost. Absolute cesspool tbh

 

Honestly I know it just ends up being kinda like self torture lol but I do personally think it’s important (for me, can’t speak for everyone) to see conflicting view points even if (especially if) they make you very angry.
It’s really easy to spend all your time in leftist spaces or with like minded people and a place like Facebook with their algorithm becomes a bit like an echo chamber. I just think we all need a slap in the face of what the sad reality is that HALF of Americans believe in. It’s easy to forget that these opinions make up a huge portion of our society.
I know that I would be happier by putting my head down and doing my own thing and not caring, but I don’t think it overall helps my personal life ambition of “helping make the world a better place”

I dunno I don’t blame anyone for not actively engaging. I do think you need to pay attention tho.

 

Neolibs honestly annoy me more than conservatives because I understand what a bigot is. Can’t relate, but I get the concept. Neolibs just always miss the point.

 

I understand paying attention but I realized it was taking a huge toll on my mental health for absolutely no gain with all of the arguing on social media, at least FB in particular. Like my aunt and uncle didn't come to my cousin's wedding because they got into a fight with each other on FB about Trump. And yeah, they have really really shitty opinions but razing those relationships on social media is not how I want things to go down. It was actively weighing on me all the time and I just had to step away.

I didn't talk to my mom for a month after the election, our relationship has basically never recovered because I can't look at her the same way. We also don't live near each other so there's not much time to talk about anything. I'd like to have an open conversation about these things but when my aunt and uncle were texting "lol are you crying hahahah libtards" (basically the convo) literally in a group chat my with me, my cousins and other aunts who voted for Hillary it was like how is this ever going to be productive?

I agree, and I also agree that there are people like @supernovagirl who feel the drive to have these important conversations with people I really don't wanna associate with, but who need to become educated and have an avenue for that education. It's not @supernovagirl's obligation to do that of course, but you know what I mean.

 

I really am not a fan of arguing, it makes me anxious and that makes me even worst at the actual arguing

 

Yeah I’m definitely NOT meaning to imply everyone should engage and like I said I agree it would be better for my mental health to abstain as well.

But as someone who is minoring in WGS and wants to work as an activist/lobbyist/etc...being engaged is kinda the whole thing. It’s my whole deal. As angry as it makes me, it’s also the only damn purpose I have. So. It’s right for *me*. But I don’t mean to imply that everyone else should feel that way!!

 

Of course. And it's super important to sometimes do that, I'm just speaking pretty generally about some specific situations. Sometimes it just feels hopeless and that feels bad :(
