Same tbh but I wish it came later on the album I think.

Side not, people compare this to m83, I liked Junk but what did other people think?

 

I'm not seeing the similarities but I definitely need to listen to this more. I wasn't fond of Junk unfortunately.

 

Not into this at all, but I respect the new direction and the vibe. I am not connecting with it, unfortunately.

 

Only a few songs in but I'm vibing with this right now. I didn't listen to the last record too much, but Versus was pretty cool and Bradley was a great choice for this band. Really cool pop direction without completely abandoning the sound they've made the last couple.

Sometimes I kind of wish they just changed their name when he joined. Not because I care that the sound changed or anything (I was never a real big fan of Jonny Craig Emarosa) but just cus I think they would've shed a lot of the baggage that they get now from annoying fans.

 

this albums fucking owns. i went into it expecting bad 1975 s/t rip offs but i'm blown away.

 

this album is pure cheese

more sargento than velveeta though

 

I definitely like this more than their other stuff.

Really liked my first listen. Hell of It, and the closer were cool. Need to have another spin. My only real complaint is they went pop, but it doesn’t really take any risks other than that. Though it’s a well made album, and a lot of it bops.

 

More thoughts from today.

It’s a watered down, not as good, version of a sound I really like. The main issue ends up being: I’ve heard those other albums, and they write better choruses.

I get Jason's take, to me a lot of it sounds like an approximation of Bad Rabbits at best, but I like that sound enough that I'm down with it. Definitely loses a bit of steam after the acoustic track.

 

the listener decides who had the original or better choruses. that’s why it’s called an opinion.

 

But deciding that things are “better” than others based on personal opinion is moot to begin with.

 

no one is using better in an objective sense, I don’t know how that’s not obvious

 

From an objective perspective: which songs have choruses that will be actual hits, chart, and impact the pop music and culture.

From a subjective perspective: which ones contain well constructed hooks and melodies that I find pleasing and personally enjoy. Which ones are unique and not over done. Which ones should be hits but won’t be.

If your argument is “it’s pointless to talk about what you like and why...” I clearly disagree.

Of course that argument can be made about the majority of pop albums out there, that’s what separates the generic from the great. The ok and fine from the special. The remembered from the forgotten. That’s the underlying point I’m trying to make.

 

I don’t know why people still need someone to write “this is my opinion” before things, like seriously that’s just baked in to someone saying “here’s my thoughts!” — that’s what the words “my thought” means.

 

This album is pretty damn good.

Bradley is a more talented hook writer and vocalist then most popular pop rock bands presently touring/releasing music.

This is their first venture into this genre, and it’s pretty remarkable it’s as good as it is for something really out of left field for this band.

 

I disagree, subjectively, and point to the objective metrics as well.

There’s no “High Hopes” here. There’s no “Love it if We Made It.” There’s no “Feel it Still” — that’s a different level. That’s impacting pop in a completely different way. That’s becoming a cultural moment to talk about and discuss. That’s pop music doing what pop music is meant to do at its best. And those hooks, those moments, aren’t here. That’s why my opinion is it’s fine vs its special.

(The claim of more “talented” hook writer just rings hollow to me when the hooks on this album would be rejected in most songwriting sessions for most pop artists. They’re not gonna see radio play. Taylor Swift isn’t singing that “Get Back Up” chorus. I doubt even Matt Squire lets that through. )

 

There's almost nothing left field about this. I enjoy it, since this style is just enjoyable to me in general, but I don't get that claim.

Yeah sorry not gonna compare Emarosa’ first pop venture to LIIWMI, and Feel It Still Jason.
