I mean the bible talks about stoning homosexuals and is thus inherently anti-LGBTQ amongst many other horrible things so unless the institution in question has completely disowned the Old Testament altogether being a devout churchgoer shouldn’t be glamorized to begin with

But he’s been a proud family values Conservative for a while now so I mean this isn’t news exactly

Hillsong specifically is less of a church and more of a cult. Mega churches like that give me the heebie-jeebies.

Oh cool, anti-religious nonsense. My favorite. Maybe we should invite Bill Maher here.

It's possible to critique institutions and denounce hatred without slipping into ignorance and sweeping generalizations that erase a ton of people's experiences, y'know.

It’s still representative of church culture as a whole though, Hillsong is (or atleast was) a pretty common template for most churches to use - singing their songs, using their teachings/videos etc

I don’t think that’s directed at me, but for the record, I don’t have an issue with Chris, or any celebrity, being an outspoken Christian. With that said, there are a lot of pro LBGTQ churches, especially in LA. Hillsong ain’t it.

I’m so ignorant having spent 2/3 of my life in the very thing being talked about, caught me. Religious institutions are inherently bad in my opinion and spirituality is totally fine on the individual level

My last post wasn’t directed at you. I was addressing @Tim’s post. Trust me. I know everything about growing up religious. I basically grew up in a cult

with Chris it's coupled with the fact that he's a Blue Lives Matter gun nut
I don't think being in a cult is inherently problematic but the fact that an evangelical megachurch is the new Kabbalah is disconcerting

I second this. My church allows LGBT members (servants) and a 5 second Google search showed me numerous ones just in Raleigh itself.

I have no idea about Hillsong. Are all Hillsongs under one roof? The only Hillsong I’m aware of is a church in Australia that releases music.

it's an offshoot of the Australian Church but it's based in New York and there's also a LA bible study group

Just to be clear, I'm (hopefully obviously) not saying that all critiques of all religious structures are bad. Or even that all comments here were that. But, seeing the very idea of religion is thrown under the bus by some, I'm sorry, I've gotta push back on that noise. Religion, at its best, is a beautiful expression of cultural and spiritual values. Everyone carries different baggage and scars, and I respect that, but again, once it starts slipping into erasing others' experiences, it kinda becomes nonsense.

I was raised in the church and my father is a minister, so I’ve seen people speak out on their faith while being in incredibly bigoted churches just like Chris my entire life. That specific culture is so damaging and calling it out so often gets dismissed as being “anti-religious” when it’s a systemic issue that needs to be dismantled. They start out hiding behind the “good, wholesome, American family values” and then I’ve seen so many people go down that road and then end up completely entrenched in bigoted or hateful ideas.

I didn’t realize that Chris was a blue lives matter type, I thought he was just an outdoorsy, laid back dude. That’s a disappointment. And I don’t remember him talking in this specific way until recently, and that is what really concerns me. If he’s always been a Christian that’s obviously fine and hasn’t reflected negatively on him before, but joining this church and suddenly going on about it in this way sends off every red flag for me.

Right, this is more what I was trying to convey. Even in more progressive churches that are tolerant of gay folks there still seems to be the mentality that their sexuality is something that can be changed through acceptance of the congregation or God's love or something, I can't count how many times I've heard "hate the sin, love the sinner" as a way of getting around the paradox

Didn't mean to offend anybody or come off as intolerant, but I have more than enough reason to side-eye this stuff and it's definitely not as uncommon as people would like to believe

The religious people that I know personally and respect are the ones who don't preach and advertise their religion constantly. There's not a lot of them.

Oh definitely. It is SUCH a common thing, along with countless other ways in which people who are “different” are made to feel less than. And it’s not just in huge culty churches like Hillsong and stuff, it’s everywhere.

I do know specific people who try to actually promote true Christian values, but they are the ones focused on social justice and anti-racism and trans rights and healthcare, who actively work to weed out the toxic aspects of their own church and churches as a whole instead of throwing out platitudes on social media while ignoring everything negative.

I can’t speak for all religions but Jesus commands his followers to spread the Gospel to all nations so if someone is serious about their faith I think they’ll want to talk about it.

But there’s also a fine line between wanting to follow Jesus and being condescending via advertising the religion which (correct me if i’m wrong) is what I think you may be talking about.

yes, if someone wants to follow the teachings of Jesus as in be a socialist and advocate for the rights of sex workers and marginalized people and practice small scale community living making sure everyone is taken care of that is fine by me, but given his distaste for the Pharisees I don't think he'd be setting foot in any modern day church building lol

all, of course, with the presupposition that any of this ever happened which I ain't going to get into on here as people seem riled up enough already

ANYWAYS, SORRY, BACK TO CHRIS PRATT AND STUFF.

I 100% agree with the first paragraph above this comment and think Jesus would absolutely want people to be like that.

I think the Pratt stuff is pretty done though. No one here is sticking up for his church. We’ll just have to see if he responds to any of the criticisms.

I dont think Pratt is all about Blue Lives Matter, but he’s definitely pro-cop, judging from his National Police Day post on Insta and him appearing at cop charity events.

I can’t judge someone on their personal faith and where they are with it, but having been in the church, places like Hillsong rub me the wrong way. And I really hate the performative Christian stuff that Pratt (and people like him that I know) do, like erecting a cross or doing the “Daniel Diet.” It’s the antithesis of humility concerning religion.

Growing up in a super religious household has fucked me up so much for so long that I now have a very short leash for tolerance of how awful it is. I try not to step on toes talking shit about it but it’s hard.

Yep to every part of this, I was being polite! I just find it strange how we can openly condemn Republicans and it’s widely agreeable but this conversation is so off limits despite all the ideological overlap

    (for another thread though lol)

There are a ton of great aspects of it but it’s all from the community side and none from the theological side, in my opinion. I know a lot of incredible people I love that are still wrapped up in it. My parents are devout!

    It’s a weird balance, man.
