    I'm Back.

I've said this to myself so many goddamn times. Kansas City was far worse in terms of drivers, by the way. Not as many of them, but with a 55mph speed limit on the highway, the frustration is real.

I believe they can go into the DMV and get a drivers license just the same as everyone else, I'm not sure exactly how because if they're undocumented, how can you have an identification in the US? But either way, they CAN get a DL legally, and the shit storm it causes is that there are far more people on the roads and far more people without insurance.

I understand that some citizens don't have auto insurance, but that number is higher when you have undocumented people driving on the same roads.

Anyway. My buddy was here illegally and he drove just fine without a license.

Edit: He had to. If he got caught they'd deport his ass.

Ok so there is something you might be missing here. Driving without insurance is illegal, so whether you are undocumented or not if you get pulled over and can't produce proof of insurance, you are getting in trouble.

Can undocumented people not get insurance? I don't know the answer to that.

Aside from that, the implications of what you are advocating for is undocumented drivers. People need to be able to drive in order to be productive members of society, they are either going to do that with or without a license. I would prefer with a license.

Public transportation is also an option, though it is easier in urban areas and practically non-existent in rural areas

Even suburban areas lack public transportation in most cities.

In large cities with lots of public transportation it is easy to be productuve without a car or the ability to drive. But I think most of the country needs to have a personal mode of transportation.

with our current infrastructure, yes most of the country needs personal transport most likely

I think the main argument I have is if it's illegal to be here without citizenship, who is it legal to get a state recognized driver's license? If you are illegally living in California, why are you able to take advantage of the state's benefits?

Also, have any of you driven in Tijuana? If not, I suggest you try it.

my concern, and i may not be following this correctly, would be if they're here illegally but they're driving, that means they're not paying taxes or having any money going to the financing of keeping roads in good / decent shape like others do/are. BUT, i know each state can be different with where this money comes from for roads and such. Living in Wisconsin, we have super shitty roads EVERYWHERE. But Michigan has fantastically, almost eerily smooth roads everywhere i've been in that state, but the funding comes from different sources.

    I'm Back.

It's a new thing in California, only a little over a year old.

    California AB-60 Driver's License | DMV.org

As of January 2015, California residents who cannot establish legal presence in the United States may apply for a driver's license if they can show eligible proof of identification and residency in the state. These driver's licensesmay not be used for identification purposes. By law, no one may discriminate against a holder of an AB-60 license, or use this license to attempt to question the holder's citizenship or immigration status.

So in California, immigration laws essentially mean nothing. Once you're here, you're good to go.

Not sure if it's the same in every state but I believe gas taxes pay for roads.

You need to drive around Metro Detroit more. Or on I-75. Or I-94. Or I-96. Or....

trying to find it for Wisconsin because we have a big issue here with roads and it seems like it's not gas tax for us, some sort of weird conglomerate of random things and causes i've never heard or nor understand. sounds about right.

ah, found something: it's a mixture of state aid, federal funding and local funds.

haha i usually just swing down around Lake Michigan and come up to Grand Rapids. that drive / area always baffles me with how smooth and Indy 500 roadway the roads look.

The issue of illegal immigration is a little too heavy for me to get into right now but I will address some of your comment.

It's not practical or do-able to export all of our illegal immigrants back to whence they came. If it was do-able, it would certainly be unethical. So, what do we do about it? Certainly we can't just have all of these unknown people running our around our country using resources and not paying into them right? Well, the only way to convert undocumented people into productive and contributing members of society is to put them on the grid. The last thing you want 12 million illegal immigrants doing is living in insular silos and not assimilating into society.

    curiosity question(s) for all:

when are you sure you know who you are voting for? have you ever had your choice change and was that at the beginning of campaigning or near the end?

Yeah the areas up north are much smoother. There's a smaller population up north though and large swaths of the state in that area are relatively empty. Once you get down to the city, though, my god. The roads are horrendous. A few years ago the state was essentially forced to fix several miles of I-96 because they failed structural tests and were deemed a danger. They funneled millions of dollars into fixing about, oh say six miles or so, and the rest is still a horrendous mess. That six mile stretch though, wow. Great stuff.

    I'm Back.

Southern California is already populated enough, but with this new law of undocumented driver's licenses, you make things more crowded than they have to be. Before, I would assume a high percentage of people here illegally took buses and other public transportation. But now they can drive and not have to worry about anything.

I don't know if insurance companies are allowed to give someone insurance with no ID, because that driver license isn't an ID, but maybe now insurance companies have exemptions.

Now I'm not saying lets get rid of all illegals, but something has to stop before a seriously over population happens. There is no motivation for people to become citizens, but even then, the population is still an issue.
