what’s the justification for wanting a digital only console? all games are available digitally as it is, seems like you’re asking for less options? the only pro i can think of is removing the optical drive which idk if that’s a big deal to many

 

I can see Xbox doing a cheaper streaming only console at launch with a normally priced model with a disc drive.

 

Although unless something changes drastically in the next two years the USA is not ready for streaming at all

 

Cheaper model for those that want it and try to help them push units.

The internet in many of the most important markets is not yet good enough for streaming and/or digital ONLY, at least not for mainstream gaming devices. Plus data caps etc. We did this all before in this thread.

 

The streaming only console would straight up flop in it was released now, the American internet infrastructure as a whole is garbage.

I'd be shocked if the PS5 isn't BC with the PS4, and I'd be shocked if it is BC with PS3, PS2, and PS1. It'd be a day-one purchase if I could throw a PS3 disc in there and play all of my digital PS3 games, but I really don't see that happening with how weird the PS3 hardware is.

 

It'd be a major turning point if they make the PS4 backwards compatible after remaking all those games from the PS1 and 2 era.

Shoutout to the original PS3 model, which can play PS1 and PS2 games. The only machine you need to play the entire Metal Gear series, and the only machine that can do it.

 

It is backwards compatible technicaly if you use psn now and you can play ps3 games using psn now

 

Which is partly why it was so expensive

 

The industry has done studies or research on backwards compatibility and they've consistently found that, even though it is a highly requested feature, it's not used significantly when available. I'm sure that's part of the reason why companies just don't actively pursue it. Why try to figure out how to make a PS3 game work on the PS4 when you just could port over the highest selling games?

That's the other part of the market: remasters/remakes. They generally sell well. You also should keep in mind that for nostalgia factor playing PS1 games is nice, but it's not like SNES or NES games where the graphics hold up, the transition to 3D games and the awkward cameras and controls in the PS1 era just make some games unplayable.

I'd very much enjoy backwards compatibility, but only for like 10 games that I know won't ever get remakes.

 

After the THPS talk here the other day I've been hankering to dig out my copy of 2. If I could just throw that into a ps5 I'd be delighted.

In fact give me a current gen console that i can play THPS and the Timesplitters games on and I will never ask anything of Sony ever again.

 

Actually the backwards compatibility on Xbox One X has led some 360 games to temporarily enter the video games charts again

 

I still can't believe this Metro controversy is a real thing.
