I guess I kind of don't understand him. I feel like a big part of the reason why he didn't want to be in blink anymore was because he wanted to be taken as a serious artist/musician and is embarrassed with some of the stuff he's done in the band (i.e. the joke songs, some of his poppy songs like ATST and First Date). Then he goes off and does something like this and I don't know. I mean good for him but yeah not my cup of tea.

sounds like we need an official chorus.fm interview to get down to the bottom of it!

  3. It’s also feels like a weird over-correction. Like, it reads and sounds like “old Tom,” but doesn’t feel right

The art in that video is actually cool I'll say. Reminds me of the Rayman video games.

Kind of like how whenever he talks about recording new AVA music he says it sounds like super fast punk old school type music?

I don't know if he cares that much about being serious. He's still clearly as silly as ever making things like that. I think it was because Mark and Travis were 100% on music and he wanted to spend his time 25% on books, 25% on movies, 25% on space ships and 25% on music (or whatever %) so the other guys would be sitting on their hands doing nothing 75% of the time without him which they wouldn't accept. (Also the fact him and Mark just aren't friends anymore.)

    Die rad.

yea I like the vibe of the song, but it gets redundant real quickly before the second half of the song even starts. needs another Mark verse.

When he first left blink he absolutely wanted to be viewed as a serious musician and even now he wants to be taken serious with his To The Stars Company. I feel like he still wants to be taken seriously but that's not really who he is and why he keeps going back to his immature side (I'm trying to come up with a better word but can't at the moment).

Yeah you're right in terms of the TTS stuff and when he first left blink but I dunno anymore. At the start sure but I think he's dialed it back to appeal to core blink fans (hence namedropping them before every other project announcement and always saying "I'm still the same guy!" etc). I'm not sure releasing a song with "Golden Showers" in the title is the mark of a serious man. Although I'm sure he plays it to every secret CIA official at clandestine meetings.

I feel like it's more of an identity crisis situation. He started AvA to be taken as a serious musician, and when blink got back together he started trying to force the toilet humor back into it and pander to old fans (as if he thought that's all blink was or could be). It just didn't feel authentic anymore, and blink fans that had actually followed his career didn't even associate that humor with him at that point (not sure if he even realized that).

It's more like he tries to take on these personas project-by-project when it's applicable.

Say what you want but that riff in golden showers and others on the Tom Demo is better than anything on California.

That Tom demo doesn’t exist and we don’t speak of it.

One of the only blink related releases I refuse to go back to

  15. there's one song on that demos album that i like, but the others can all fuck off

That would imply that California had any riffs on it.

  17. Exactly this. He’d say one thing with AvA like “this music is serious. I’m more than dick jokes” but then by the second tour he all of a sudden was the same guy and it felt so disingenuous

  18. Endless summer? That’s I’m the only one I can stomach and that’s only after a terribly unnecessary intro. Same thing he did to “disaster.” What a great song that I think most people hate because the intro is so bad.

I just youtubed that Golden Showers song to refresh the ol' mem and my god what a song. Those fucking lyrics man. I wish they'd combined it with blink's California.

Beige little boxes in a row
Neighbors and friends that you don't know
I jack myself to sleep every night, I'll have a dozen
I'll let you watch the show when I'm pooping on your cousin

    Hey here's to you California
    Beautiful haze of suburbia
    California, this is California
    We fuck in California

I totally forgot about those Tom demos haha. What a strange release.

Same. I actually legitimately like that song for the most part. I also like parts of "New World", "Suburban Kings", and "Animals" and thought they had potential, but man, they all have super cringey sections that keep me from wanting to listen to them ever again.

A good 80% of that EP is garbage (and that's being generous). The whole thing was essentially just a petty move to say "Look guys - I really was working on blink stuff. So it can't be my fault..."

Identity crisis is a perfect description for him. Him going back and forth between "hey I'm taking to start up an important band/business that's going to change the world so please take me seriously" to "hey I'm still the same old Tom making fart jokes" depending on what he's trying to sell is what makes him seem so disingenuous. You took the words right out of my head and explained it much better than I have been trying too.

See my previous post but I think it's just Tom trying to play both sides of the fence depending on what he's trying to sell or prove on any given day. I think the point of that demo album was to try and prove to the blink fans that "hey I'm still the same Tom and can write super fast punk songs and not just the space stadium rock stuff that sounds like AVA" and he was working on blink music before he got kicked out/left the band. But you're right that song isn't the mark of a serious man and forgot about it (mainly because I've blocked that demo album out of my mind).
