There's no above-board reason for her or the other people who came to her to complain about this. They were just being bigoted and petty. They were annoyed that Chinese-looking students were speaking Chinese and came to her to not only bitch about it and gossip, but also looking for their names so they could actively fuck with them going forward. It's telling that she's completely comfortable with all of this to the point where she sends out a email about it.

Some better "off the record" real world advice to her English-speaking students would be: "You want a leg up going forward...? Learn Cantonese and Mandarin."
