For the most part, we are all having a great discussion here, not sure how you think this comment contributes to it.

I'd like a source that you're relying on to put forth this argument:
That these animals, that you say can only be effectively hunted with AR-15's, destroy over a "billion dollars in crops."

I'm all for the banning of ammo, though.

And by the way, there has been a ban on ammo recently. It happened last year (I think it stuck around, maybe it was reversed), but ammo with a specific amount of lead in the projectile was banned for use by the public...but the military could keep using it. The thought was that they could be armor piercing so they did away with it.

The funny thing is that they claimed they also claimed that the amount of lead could be hardful to the environment...yes we use lead fishing weights all the time and there are countless sitting at the bottom of damn near every body of water.

Because you don't think gun control will work so we shouldn't even bother trying, but there are plenty of countries that show that it can work.

And meanwhile as this country takes years to have this conversation, more people die due to guns.

This is part of why some people (i.e. Hillary Clinton) propose to lift protections on gun manufacturers from lawsuits. If they'er financially responsible for the destruction caused by what they manufacture, they'll be more likely to do things like this (tracking the guns).

    The Truth About "Assault Weapons"

    • AR-15-platform rifles are among the most popular firearms being sold. Lawful gun owners in the U.S. own an estimated 5-10 million of them.
    • Depending on the definition there are an estimated 20-30 million lawfully owned Modern Sporting Rifles in the U.S. These include AK’s, HK’s, SKS’s, and all other types of modern sporting rifles.
These facts came from here, apparently.

Also. If you have an animal eating your crops, and it's a fast moving one, wouldn't you want something that can fire quickly and not have to be reloaded after 5 rounds? So yea, a fast firing, high capacity, smaller caliber weapons would be perfect.

The manufacturers are in bed with the military. Could you imagine if major manufacturers just said fuck it, no more weapons for the military if we have to track what we sell to citizens.

    They don't.

If they want one, keep it in a secure place in your home and that's it.

The source states that number isn't just taking into account agricultural damage to farms, it includes environmental damage as well, but fair enough. Now any support for the assertion that wild pigs can only be hunted by AR-15s and not a simpler hunting rifle with a much smaller magazine?

I don't see the relevance of this post.

Yeah ammo restrictions seem to be a feasible way to start smothering the market

The amount of these types of weapons on the street compared to the amount of times they were used in a mass shooting.

Hunting and protection seem to be it , it's complicated though because hunting for sustenance is way different than hunting for sport and they don't always actually protect people

Also worth noting guns actually make your home less safe with significant increase in suicide risk as well as increase homicide rates. Can't link the study as I'm on mobile, it's Guns in the Home and Risk of a Violent Death in the American Journal of Epidemiology

Surely there has to be other alternatives to protecting your crops besides an AR-15...and more importantly, other alternatives than a high capacity gun

    That isn't what we're discussing.

All my experiences with animals, including wild pigs, tells me they would likely be scared off by the sound of the shot itself. Also the notion that AR-15s are the only tool to guard against this strikes me as absurd considering a sturdy fence could likely do the job even better.

They would never do that. That would mean just folding up and going out of business, which makes no sense when government contracts pay a shitton of money, way more than enough to make a profit.

the number of times they were used in a mass shooting compared to their overall numbers isn't what matters, its how often theyre used in mass shootings compared to other weapons.

I mean, I am certainly not "for" dead kids. I know you didn't mean that but saying things like that creates a lot of animosity and can easily devolve the conversation into an argument. I think we all need to remember that people are lurking this forum and maybe trying to learn the nuances of the issue (of which there are many).

Anyways to respond to your point. On a high level I just think America has a culture problem. We are violent and imperialistic, we are diverse with a lack of understanding of each other's lifestyles, we have a media more concerned with ratings than information, we all start taking psychosomatic drugs at a young age because both of our parents were working all day and didn't want to deal with us, we spend hours a day consuming violent media, we have become increasingly anti-social opting for online interactions over in-person interactions, and we spend our days chasing money instead of happiness.

So, periodically, people succumb to what our culture begs of them, kill.

I hope that explains my perspective somewhat.

Possibly, I am not too familiar with that world, there may be alternative that farmers use.
