Why do you need an AR-15 style rifle? What will you do with it that you can not do with a less powerful gun?

I believe this question has been answered previously.

I wouldn't buy one because I don't hunt or own a farm; and if they make non-lethal rounds in a magazine, not sure if they do, the gun is too long for home defense. I think it's longer than a short barrel shotgun but I'm not sure.

I'm not going to put the gun to blame, because most guns have accessories that will make you be able to fire quicker and hold more rounds, so it's the person and their motivation that are the real problem.

One other bit of information for some of you, the AR-15, like most other rifles, come in varying lengths (higher or lower velocity).

    Carbine - Less than 10"
    Mid - 10-18"
    Rifle - 20 plus

So if the only purpose is hunting or farming, do you agree that it would be okay to install tracking systems in the guns so that authorities can be instantly alerted if the ever leave the confines of a farm or hunting range?

So you can't travel with it? What if you need to leave for one reason or another?

Yea I don't care, put Lowjack on them, but who installs it? Is it a manufacturer thing or do third parties jump in? Because there are a lot of third party safety accessories that the manufacturers do not install out of the box.

But also you're turning a presumed responsible person into someone being monitored by authorities only for the reason that the gun has a bad reputation.

I think a good feature would be to add tracking capabilities so that the owner of the gun would be notified via a text alert when the gun isn't where it is supposed to be. That way the owner can notify the authorities if and when his/her gun was stolen.

    Exactly.

I don't understand how people aren't equating the gun owner's motivation to the violence, regardless of the weapon chosen to use. The problem is the person is a fucking psychopath and wants to kill as many people as possible. You take one weapon away, they'll use something else, and so on and so on. Dude could have driven into the line getting into the club also, so what do we do then? He could have rented a 25' Uhaul moving truck and drove down the entire line of people full speed. I can keep going but I mean come on, the person is the problem.

There were 372 mass shootings in the US in 2015, killing 475 people and wounding 1,870. I'm pretty sure it's the guns that are the problem.

If those people weren't around, the shootings wouldn't have happened.

We can argue this either way.

But he didn't use a U-Haul, he used a legal device literally designed to kill living beings. So I don't see why we're making hypothetical situations of what the killer could have done given he and others will always gravitate towards the most lethal and accessible option.

Of course the person who pulls the trigger is the cause of the tragedy but we literally allow the trigger to exist and be sold willy nilly

If I could just forget it

Once you remove the gun, the problem of the person still remains. I think that's the point.

    I'm Back.

Because if guns weren't around people think that these mass killings will stop, or at least be toned down a bit. But maybe it will force people to become more creative and start going GTA V on people. Anything can be used as a weapon if you're creative enough.

All shootings: Some 13,286 people were killed in the US by firearms in 2015, according to the Gun Violence Archive, and 26,819 people were injured [those figures exclude suicide].

How the US compares: The number of gun murders per capita in the US in 2012 - the most recent year for comparable statistics - was nearly 30 times that in the UK, at 2.9 per 100,000 compared with just 0.1. Of all the murders in the US in 2012, 60% were by firearm compared with 31% in Canada, 18.2% in Australia, and just 10% in the UK.

They aren't sold willy nilly. That dude passed the Florida regulated security checks for purchasing a firearm, period. Florida needs to get their shit together.

Yes but we are enabling the person with a device specifically designed to do the thing they are doing with it. I don't understand how this is confusing.

A Philly reporter was able to, a few days ago, walk into a gun shop and walk out with an AR-15 in 7 minutes.

Guns are sold pretty much willy nilly, considering the power they have and the thing they're designed to do.

I would say that if several highly lethal mass shootings took place with the weapon, we are not regulating the weapon enough.

It's not, it's just stating a reality. I understand guns are a problem, but replace them with a canister of gasoline and you have the same murderous asshole bent on killing people.

How do we identify and stop/treat these people?
