I guess I wasn't very clear. I wasn't trying to compare a chainsaw to an AR-15. I was trying to compare the need for a chainsaw in a 2 bedroom condo in a densely populated city vs the need for an AR-15 outside of rural/hunting applications.

There are, very practical, reasons for a hunter to need an AR-15, someone protecting their crops (aka your food) as well.

It isn't an "argument", it's a statement of fact. Unless you want to starve to death, our nation's crops and farmland need to be protected from predators.

I hope some common sense proposals are introduced, rather than these ridiculous "lists" that everyone seems to support.

It's Congress though, common sense seems unlikely.

Are foxes and other rural pests so strong that an ordinary rifle with lower magazine capacity can't take them out?

My issue with radical Islam is that it's never discussed under the context of "well, this is an issue and let's figure out why it is the way it is, and how we can combat this"; it's generally brought up by chicken hawk cowards who are ready to dole out blame but not actually have any sort of productive conversation. I think Obama knows that by conceding and making some speech about "Radical Islam" he's essentially dismissing all of the variables that go into the equation of why a specific group of people is willing to commit horrible acts of terror.

I cannot for the life of me see any tactical or strategic value towards using the term "radical Islam."

But hey, the word "terrorist" now is already synonymous with anyone of Middle East or South Asian descent so sure, let's just double down on that.

I am curious of how you think an AR-15 differs from an "ordinary" hunting rifle.

  11. drstrong

    I'm Back.

"Ordinary" rifles can be the same caliber as an AR-15, yea it will hold 1/3 of the rounds, but you could purchase subsonic ammo (low velocity) if you're worried about over penetration.

The 5.56x45mm round found in most AR-15's is very similar to a .223 (same external size, 5,000psi differential), which can be found in more traditional rifles used for hunting animals the size of deer or smaller.

To put it another way, if you look at a caliber chart that goes from left to right, smallest to largest, the .223 is a few from the left.

So the only argument is "why do you need something with a 30 round magazine"...and I don't know why anyone really needs that.

i'm writing a book, leave me alone.

i very much agree with your points, but World's Dumbest Hillbilly's has shown several clips over the years of people doing exactly this (although the gun in question may not exactly be an AR-15).

Ugh, anything that shoots fully automatic (holding down trigger and multiple bullets come out) is illegal and the gun has to be customized to do such a thing. You could get your hands on a fully automatic weapon but it's illegal to purchase and own.

The ignorance with gun safety/usage here is insane.

Agreed. There are a lot of people who have strong feelings about gun policy but don't know the difference between a semi-automatic and automatic weapon.

There are some new reports coming out stating that 1000 rounds were fired, not sure if that 1000 rounds of the NATO rounds or combined with police. IF that's all from the dude, holy hell how did he do that and how did he carry that many magazines? The logistics of this doesn't make sense at all.

Agreed. I'm for moderate gun control, but man i can't help but roll my eyes whenever i hear a pro gun control person call a semi auto rifle a "machine gun".

Then give farmers permits and ensure the legal ammo is designed to only help farmers. Guy in Orlando want a farmer, didn't need a gun that can end lives at such an alarming rate.

Also could maybe embed GPS in the inner workings of the gun to alert authorities if it left the proximity of the farm. Assuming the person buying the gun just wants it to defend their crops, I think that is a sacrifice they should be willing to make

So you know, there are handguns which can hold anywhere between 15-20 rounds with a standard magazine. Extended magazines are legal to purchase, but I don't think that's the case in every state.

The point is that this dude could have done this with any gun, didn't have to be a rifle. The problem is with the guy, not the gun.

The AR-15 was specifically lauded in the 60s for it's ability to dismember and kill when other guns with identical placement of the rounds would only injure. Even if he didn't use the AR-15, it's silly to pretend that the speed at which it fires affects its actual power and ability to cause bodily harm or fatal wounds.

The AR-15 was built for slaughter in war zones

"In The Gun, C.J. Chivers’ Pulitzer-winning history of the AK-47, he describes the AR-15 as “an American shift in rifles for killing men,” and recounts the thousands of Pentagon tests with live animals and cadavers that charted just how well the rifle could blow through internal organs and turn brains into mist on the battlefield.

This is the genetic makeup of the AR-15: It’s not a household tool for hunting feral pigs. Nor is it meant for defending yourself against against a home invasion, unless of course a platoon of Viet Cong is invading your home. And although the early AR-15 proved to be mechanically unreliable in Vietnam, its raw killing power, its ability to blow holes through people, is just as clear inside a gay bar in 2016 as it was in a jungle in 1962."

You know, when people like this start to explain what happened, you have to wonder if they're recalling everything correctly or not. This video has been making the rounds for a while now.

    Cliffs
-Heard two guns going off at the same time.
-Says fully auto sounding weapon, did the machine gun sound.
-Saw someone holding the door closed, preventing people from leaving.

The Ar-15 (civilian model) is semi-automatic while the M16 (military model) is full or 3-round burst. The AR-15 by itself, out of the box, is NOT a military weapon.

Also, go here for the differentiating internals:

    www.ar15.com/content/legal/ar15-m16parts/

The gun itself is the same, for the most part, BUT the firing mechanism is completely different.

But given the size and grip of a handgun, from what I understand, they're generally notably less accurate

Depends on the user. I'm sure you've seen videos of idiots shooting rifles/shotguns and obliterating their face.
