Ugh I couldn't tell if that was Mark, Matt, John or Joel Madden singing.

Seriously though, it sounded really good.

Quick someone check on @Bad Frequencies and make sure he didn't pass out.

I dispute this a little. I guess you can get used to them both singing on every single song, but they change up which verse, like Left Alone they go back and forth in the verses, BTD is Mark verse, Matt chorus, Matt verse, Mark leads with both on the chorus, etc. It just wasn't that rigid

Edit: I wouldn't mind each guy getting their own dedicated songs a couple times this time around though

This Reddit comment is funny, about working with the Chainsmokers:

"understand what you're saying, but is this really what Blink has come to?

"Hopefully it isn't that bad. And if it is, who cares?!"

I guess I just need to accept that the glory days are over and Blink is now officially a legacy band feeding off of nostalgia."

However one feels about the Chainsmokers, writing a song with them is definitely not a legacy/nostalgia move lol.

  7. It could be that they're just recording directly into the computer and/or using only virtual amps, and then compressing them to death from there.

Yeah I just meant that Mark started every song on California, following by Matt, then Mark, then Matt. I didn't mind it per say but switch it up a bit as it got predictable. Or like you said give each guy their own song a few times.

I remember that time blink became sellouts in 1998 and then again in 2016.

Yeah Mark starting every one is a valid point, even Sober where Matt has the first verse. At least Matt does start some songs on the deluxe I guess haha.

Now I'm just waiting for some no name pop-punk band to extrapolate that barely audible clip into a full youtube cover posted just hours later

I swear they come in packs. One little low-quality 10 second clip results in a full-band "speculation cover" of the whole song, a "how-to" video on the guitar riff, and a "What this song would have sounded like in 1999" cover.

  19. I don't think I did a good job explaining what I meant, so I'll try again: What someone's personal metric is is personal, however, a song's popularity shows, objectively, that a lot of people's personal metrics say "this is good." You, me, as individuals not liking something doesn't mean millions of others don't, they, clearly, like it.

A successful song means a lot of people think it's good. The difference is that an individual, or even a lot of individuals, may not like a successful song, but that doesn't change that a lot of people do. It's why throwing around terms like "I wish they worked with good bands" makes no sense. Because they are working with bands millions of people think are good. What that's really saying is "I wish they worked with this artist instead because I like them," which is a fine position to have, but that desire doesn't make one good and the other 'bad.'

Blink-182 are one of the biggest bands in the world, still, to this day. They've done that because they want to be. They write songs for the mainstream, and in todays musical world, that means working with popular songwriters. In 2001 we didn't know what was going on behind the scenes to make the music that we heard. We didn't know about the machine that takes a band to their size and the process behind it. So, it gets romanticized. And things get lost to history.

Blink-182 are not going to write an album in 2019 that sounds like PUP. PUP are going to write that album. But that album's going to reach thousands of people, Blink are going, and are trying, to reach millions.

And I'll go a little further. Everyone seems to really like the Untitled album, but I actually think what the band is doing, working with different people, experimenting with different sounds, songwriters, ideas, is very much of the same process that gave us that album. It's just the 2019 version. The untitled album is just that process in 2003. Looking at what's popular in music, working within those styles and themes to maintain a popularity and relevance, and then shining it through the Blink-182 lens.

Lol yup the "how it would sound with Tom" with terrible Tom impressions playing riffs that Tom hasn't cared about writing in 15 years haha. Half the time they don't even sound like Tom riffs anyways. Ugh haha

As my post further goes on, I actually agree with you.

My first paragraph may indicate I was disagreeing with you, but not totally. I’m pretty much saying if we personally think something sucks that is subjective, but if blink is working with a band who is massively popular, then objectively, that band (and their music) may be considered “good.” Which you definitely said, and made clear!

Overall, I think blink fans have outlandish expectations on what blink really is/was. They’ve always been a mainstream pop band. You pretty much have nailed it.

As much as I loved California, I however, will subjectively express my issues/critiques because that’s what we do as fans, but I’ll always appreciate them continuing and know objectively they are massively successful and doing what they’ve always done.

Your point on Untitled and branching out is honestly great. People will only complain because it isn’t the “branching out” they want or think they want.

  22. People forget what liking blink when enema came out was like. Or weren’t around for it.

Also, can’t wait to hear what that clip sounds like “with a guitar solo.” Lol

This is 100% dead on. That's why I laugh/pound my head against the wall when people complain about the amount of time they spent in the studio writing California for example because it was the exact same amount of time (3 months) they spend recording Dude Ranch, EOTS and TOYPAJ. The only outliers was Untitled which took them approximately 9 months and Neighborhoods which took them years. Or the length of time in their concerts, which hasn't changed since they hit it big in 1999.

Blink has basically been doing the same things they have always done but now they're either, like Jason Tate suggested, adapting to the times or being more open about the process. Everyone seems to have this big Mandela Effect when it comes to the band.
