Sometimes I can't believe the PS2 games I played with clunky controls

But that's not what we are talking about at all. People hear Team Ico, a studio behind two great games (one of which is hailed as one of the greatest), is making another game and people are of course going to be overhyped and put them on a pedestal. Not every fan and reviewer will do that and some will most certainly said what you just said, but that narrative definitely exists in the gaming community.

Don't play Haze, the remake of Bionic Commando, TimeShift or Legendary.

 

After loving Nier Automata I found a copy of the original Nier to see how it is and I ended up just watching a video to learn the plot because holy hell it is in the top 5 worst games I've played

 

Dang, now that you mention it, I think I played more PS3 games with terrible controls because of the goddamned Sixaxis.

 

What Ive gleaned as the major point from this conversation:

No.

1. SotC is broadly revered and Ico is popular in niche circles. Both reviewed well.

2. TLG is not a revered game. Reviewers and fans have more than fairly aired their qualms with its mechanics. IGN et al. gave it 70s. The hype existed initially because SotC is revered.

3. SotC and Ico are ps2 games and are not retroactively beholden to more modern game design schemes. When they came out, their clunkiness was not egregious.

 

Disagree there, so really I think we’re at a stalemate, haha

 

I mean maybe thats fair that you hate the controls. But the rest of your narrative isnt satisfied given the facts about TLGs reception.

other legendary games with clunky controls that came out at that time: GTA San Andreas, Resident Evil 4, Knights of the Old Republic, Prince of Persia, Silent Hill, Metal Gear

Glover sure had some shit level designs. I think mechanically speaking it was an interesting game and I liked the character concept, but some of the levels just existed in the middle of the air or were spawned out of nothingness so you'd randomly like go through a waterfall in the sky and fall to your death.

 

i think a deep affinity for Glover made me numb to bad controls lol

two things can be true. people can defend bad game design from ico, and the statement that bad games would be reviewed better if they were ico games can be rightly called out as dumb and pointless

anyway just downed the 7th colossus. some of these fights are mad frustrating but none have been particularly challenging. they are fun though and the marvel and approaching a new boss hasn’t worn thin at all

I’m going to say it again and it’s the last thing I’m going to say: 10/10 was hyperbole, and that game wouldn’t have had A LOT of people saying that the frustrating parts were parts of the experience if it had been some random EA game. Nobody would have cared about that game.

 

I mean it is haha, it’s a hypothetical that has no way to be tested as being possibly true!

I disagree.

People are as excited about Team Icos worlds, art styles, experience as they are other elements. These are all components of a game.

Also, you dont have to exit the conversation, I like the conversation weve had. I think its thoughtful and good discussion for this sub. No one is mad or anything.
