That 3.3 yard per carry average is with no offensive tackles (literally 3rd and 4th string guys). We ran up the middle every first down when the defense is most likely to run blitz, and never used him in space. Half of his games he either played in the first quarter before the defense loosened up and got hurt (NYG / NYJ), or wasn’t 100% from his injury and clearly wasn’t as explosive (KC / IND). He also, like others have pointed out, played on a team with zero passing threat against defenses that mostly cared about stopping him.

If we are seriously gonna act like this season from Fournette is any different from Gurley’s second half of his rookie year / sophomore year we are influenced by some serious recency bias. It was not long ago that a poor passing offense, injured line, and a banged up Gurley under a bad coach (Fisher) led him to 3.2 YPC and thank you @CarpetElf for also pointing this out.

The glow up happens late for a lot of young players and that is why it is WAY too early to move on from Fournette, even if this year was an abject disappointment. If we moved on from him he’d be the only one who wins - because he’d get a chance at showing his skills in an actually functional offense and coaching staff.

Either way, the Jags got Fournette in a draft with McCaffrey, Kamara, Mixon, and Hunt, along with other solid names like Cook, Conner, Mack, Carson Cohen, Jones, etc. Ultimately, the value of choosing him really lowered as these other guys panned out and it's kind of proof that RB is pretty replaceable.

Dolphins OL is trash water and both Drake and Gore had good years running/catching the ball

Lol, Drake barely had better numbers than Fournette over a whole mostly healthy season, and Gore didn’t score a single touchdown.

Also, you had much better offensive playcalling. Gase at the very least gave Miami a passing game for some balance to offset the run defense.

Also, Laremy Tunsil and JuWuan James is not trash water. You had offensive tackles and that helped you get those backs in space.

Miami was 30th in passing offense

    Jacksonville was 26th

Miami was 8th in team YPC and 18th in YPG rushing

Comparing your backs’ situation and Fournette’s situation is ridiculous. Per game played, Fournette was more effective than either of them with much worse support. You can have YPC but the only time our offense did anything was with Leonard Fournette. Quite literally ran the ball throigh 8 man fronts, and still got us into scoring range much better than our other backs or our passing game

    dude Fournette had 3.3 YPC

Gore had 4.6 and Drake had 4.5

Im just saying, plenty of teams with bad OLs have RBs be at least average running the ball

Meanwhile Fournette had more yards per game than either of them... and more TD than them both combined in half the games.

With, again, not even second string, but third string OT and TE blocking the edges. There’s no way your line was worse haha

he had more yards per game because he was force fed a zillion carries

Drake had 9 TDs total, so not sure what youre talking about

anyways this argument is off the rails

It is pretty fair to compare him to Gurley I guess. That year he was the only good thing about that offense just like Fournette this year, defenses knew what it was gonna be

My bottom line is making a complete judgment of Fournette based off this year is asinine. Both for our team and for spectators. This year is highly concerning but it in no way means he’s not capable of turning it up in an average offense.

This is his absolute floor. YPC and season totals lowered by injury, he maybe had 4 healthy games all year; defenses 100% zeroed in on game planning against him; the team not throwing to him much at all; still averaging almost 60 YPG (which is 1,000 yard season if healthy) and still gets 6 TD in 6.5 games.

An offense with any positive factors - playcalling, passing offense, serviceable offensive line, anything - would be an enormous improvement on what he had around him this year. I look at his numbers and I don’t think “it’s pathetic Fournette didn’t get more”, I think “it’s pathetic we didn’t get more out of Fournette.” It’s a failure by the team more than it is individual, cause we were a lot WORSE at running without him too.

It’s gonna be really sad if Cleveland hires someone like Caldwell and botches the position they’re in right now

  22. McCaffrey had 5.0 yards per carry.

But he’s not an every down back and can’t run between the tackles.
