Taylor Lorenz, writing for The Atlantic:

Taylor Evans took the fake-“sponcon” game one step further, once faking the entire purpose of a trip to Miami. Technically, she was just there on vacation, paying her own way for everything, but on Instagram she positioned it as an exclusive press trip. “I took a lot of pics at restaurants and posted ‘Thanks so much XYZ restaurant for the hospitality!’” she said. “You say it in a way that people could interpret it as you having an established relationship with that brand … The hope is that it’s perceived in a way that looks like there’s a reason you’re in a different city and state, not just enjoying a weekend vacation.”

  3. Social media is literally THE medium for lying, whether it's explicitly creating a false persona, all the way down to subtly making your life look a little better or happier than it really is. So sad.

Kind of reminds me of some local bands I knew during the MySpace-era who would populate the "Tour" section of their profile with dates at well-known venues that they never actually booked, or would "sign" with labels/management/agents that didn't exist.

So, you’re telling me their vacation to Miami wasn’t good enough in itself? They actually had to work “on vacation” and lie to make it seem like it was a business trip? While spending their own money?

    Goodness.

I also find it funny how on Instagram you’ll get random followers and when you don’t follow them back (or when you do follow them back) they’ll just unfollow you anyways. Tryna get them follower numbers up! So ridiculous.

Instagram is the fakest social media app of the lot so this is not surprising. Haven't posted on it in over 1 year now, it is hell to me because all the "local" people I feel obligated to follow will post stories with just one text post that will say shit like "I hate when you ask some one how there day went, and they don't ask you about yours! RANT OVER" like one sentence is a rant lmao.

Instagram is very interesting. I feel like a lot of my friends who are late 20's early 30's are trying to become "influencers." They think they have a big enough social media foot print that companies should give them free stuff aka they're a living ad. Its very odd.

I see this a lot within the running community, surprisingly. Most of the somewhat known people actually do get free gear (shoes, apparel, nutrition, etc.). But there’s a fine line between being “ok” enough to get some free gear and actually being a sponsored or contracted professional athlete. It’s pretty funny to see. There’s a lot of “use my code XYZ for 10% off”.

    "We live in interesting times."

That's a very nice way to put it.

TOTALLY (kind of) RANDOM but I would highly recommend folks look into the new Peter Jackson colorized WWI documentary called "They Shall Not Grow Old". Thinking about the sacrifices citizens turned soldiers had to make 100 years ago so the world could be a better place and hopefully end all war (spoiler alert, that didn't take) is mind blowing after reading articles like the one Jason posted. We take SO MUCH FOR GRANTED.

Oh yeah! I hate it when they follow, I follow back, and then they unfollow. If I happen to notice their unfollow I'll just unfollow right back!

I think the social media stars is when I really started to feel out of touch. My little sister text me freaking out the other day because she saw I guess the famous friend of some YouTuber not even the actual YouTuber just his friend. I mean that kind of get it like I have recently become obsessed with buzzfeed unsolved mysteries on YouTube and so I could see how people would become sort of obsessed with those things and that would be their celebrities, but I definitely feel that disconnect

Ummmm...how is this a thing? Social media will eventually be the downfall of our society. Remember how nice Facebook was when you needed a .edu address to register?

I work in digital marketing and a decent enough portion of my job is influencer marketing and that world still fascinates me so much. I'd say that it's actually far easier for influencers to get free stuff/commissions on products than people think. I've worked with brands that straight up only work with sub-50k follower influencers and there's a sound strategy behind that. I also get hit up every day by bloggers who position themselves as major tastemakers and then they have like 3,500 followers and want to charge $1k/post. Then you also have rando influencers I've never heard of, only for me to realize they have like 2.5mm followers and I realize how out of touch I am with The Kids and Who they follow
