Amazing that they let it leak that they wanted Ayers and instead he says no and resigns instead. I love it.

So which Fox News personality takes the job?

Hi. Urban planning student here. Unfortunately raising the gas tax is essential to funding transportation in this country. Although turning to a VMT (vehicle miles traveled) tax is preferred in some circles, raising the gas tax is the least controversial and easiest way to fund transportation. There are some equity issues, such as cheaper vehicles being costlier to fill up; however, this has been accepted, even in progressive planning circles as a need since many transportation funding sources are becoming harder to rely on.

Additionally, in urban areas, increasing the gas tax could shift more people to transit, cycling, or other means. Unless, you're for a state handled tax, the federal gas tax is one of the best options for funding we have right now.

EDIT: Some progressive planners are for a VMT tax, but some aren't. Both have some benefits, both have drawbacks.
