    what a waste of wood

“surrounded by heads...” is so great..

Also this is much more organic compared to their last album? Which was almost entirely electro pop

    LOVE the acoustic driven tracks

  3. The back part of the album definitely is.

As someone who’s listened to 22AM literally HUNDREDS of times it’s a pretty lazy comparison. Almost to the point where I don’t get it at all lol.

Yeah The last 4 songs are definitely more “organic” sounding than 98 percent of their work.

I'm probably focusing too much on the electro side because frankly, i find the ballads and acoustic tracks pretty boring. I had the same issue with their last album having too many slow/subdued songs when I personally think their biggest strength are songs like She's American, This Must Be My Dream, It's Not Living..., Settle Down etc

I'm gona keep giving it a shot, but I just don't think this one is for me.

I would even go as far to say not just this album cycle but all of them. I tried to explain their growth and profession in a sonic and fan sense and it’s hard to appreciate the massive evolution unless the listen is informed by being aware of that stuff (at least for me). I love this album but I also have no issue saying I’ll probably enjoy listening to some older stuff more. What makes me appreciate it more is all the context/ambition that surrounds it.

I feel very similar to you but I love some of these slower songs much more than the ones on other releases. I do prefer the upbeat stuff though.

Well I’m pretty much done with my second listen and I’m borderline in love with this. Couldn’t say that about their past work. I feel like I’ll only start to enjoy it more with more listens. I already want to start it over.

One thing though, I’ll probably end up skipping “It’s not living...” most of the time. Really not a fan of that song.

  10. This I disagree with, as one of the first people to make the comparison (when I said it reminded me more of that than Radiohead). There's a reason people are asking if Justin Vernon produced it. He's one of the more well known artists to utilize sound like this, in an accessible and very popular way, over the past few years.

  11. If you leave out "Be My Mistake," the album isn't what I'd consider "slow" or "subdued" for the first 8 tracks.

This record is incredible, i cannot wait for 20 more listens and a vinyl purchase this weekend. Also, heck of a review @Drew Beringer, well done!

Damn my girlfriend just got me so excited because she texted me a picture of a record that arrived in the mail and she said it was from the U.K., thinking it was the 1975, but then I remembered I ordered another record a week or two ago

    I want my 1975 vinylllllll

I can see that. Along with some of the production choices, a lot of the horns/synths/strings during some of the slower songs I could see Justin putting into his songs.

I’m listening to “I couldn’t Be More in Love” right now and yeah, I could actually hear Justin singing something like this.

I guess I just mean the fact that people are comparing this to 22AM because of a couple tracks with vocal manipulation is weak. I actually think this is better compared to Bon Iver, Bon Iver. I see ALOT of similarities there.

“I Couldn’t Be More in Love” is reminding me a lot of “Beth/Rest” atm

I think what’s getting lost is that the initial comparison was “This sounds more like Bon Iver than it does Radiohead.”

That’s a much more nuanced take than “this sounds like Bon Iver.”

I don’t even think slow and upbeat works in this sense to describe the songs. I’m selfish but I love the damcy 80s stuff...not just “upbeat.” Take the second half of love it if we made it and throw it everywhere. Give yourself a try is upbeat but not in the same groovy sense of some of the older tracks. I think that’s what he means...

They weren’t meant too when I first said it.

  22. I mean that’s just the majority of their last album ... why not listen to that or the three billion bands that have copied it over the past few years? I’m thankful we didn’t get a redux of what they’ve done before.

I'll write you into all of my songs Supporter

I wonder what trends bands are going to try to cop from this album lol

I’m already kinda laughing at the prospect
