If the M's give money, too, I really don't see this as being bad for the Mets. Bruce and Swarzak aren't good. Dunn is a lottery pick, and Kelenic is projected to be an average MLB player. They are getting 4-5 wins towards next season, in return. I can't hate on a team that is actually trying to compete.

This move isn't even a rebuilding move for Seattle, its just a salary dump... which is more frustrating.

The trade is basically 2yrs of jay Bruce 13aav for 3 years of cano 12ishaav straight up moneywise, I think cano at 36 will be on the downtrend sooner than later but right now that part of the trade is a win. Then you factor a salary dump of swarzak and the only two good prospects any team would want in a trade back for a top tier player for a top 5 bullpen guy. If you have to trade the only good prospects your team has for a bullpen guy. I understand the need for good relief pitching, the Mets haven't had someone good there since familia 2yrs ago but a good bullpen guy can only get you so far when you suck at scoring consistently. They need another bat that isn't on the other side of 36 badly, conforto, nimmo and cespedes are constantly injured and their infield is completely replaceable too. Obviously, their offense got hot at the end of last year but I can't see that not being an outlier with the players they have. They called up friggin Tim tebow, if that doesn't speak about to the Mets issues in both scouting in the pros and the amateurs than I'm not sure what does. I understand wanting to win now but when they're one of the worst teams in baseball with the team they had last year and you're already immediately emptying your farm for the empteenth time without building it up first, that's gonna work out badly over time because you need at least average-good prospects to trade in order to acquire more good players.

I still think it's a fairish trade but it's not even close to fixing the Mets problems, simply because they have so many. For the mariners I think it's fine, obviously they're okay with taking on that salary because it'll help them in the long run. You roll the dice on two solid prospects and as dipoto said they'll be back to competing in 2021.

After you subtract Bruce and Swarzak's contracts, and add the $60M from the M's, the Mets are getting Cano for 5 years/$26M?

And then they gave up a good prospect, and a lottery ticket, for an elite reliever?

    Yea, the Mets did fine.

i like that, im still sort of against the notion of committing to a 36 year old for this long, but the if the Ms are eating a bunch of canos contract and the mets are keeping McNeil and don't have to part with alonso or any other starters, i'm kind of into it.

im into the Diaz side of things. the Mets need bullpen help, that's a fact, and Diaz is still so young. Trade for Diaz, sign another veteran reliever like Soria, and now with Lugo/Gisselman/Soria/Diaz, looking solid.

But you're definitely right about Cano. I mean, it allows us to dump Bruce and swarzak so that's cool, but we're pretty much trading our #3 and #4 prospect for a closer, and swapping contracts. But there's definitely solid infield options you could get for much cheaper that are intriguing... Jed Lowrie, Daniel Murphy, DJ Lemiehu, Dozier (1 year contrat max), Harrison, Moustakas, Marwin Gonzalez, AJ Pollock. Any of those guys with varying deals sounds more intriguing than Cano.

Dont get me wrong. I think Cano's still good. But i hate the idea of HAVING to have him for 5 years.

This feels like Roberto Alomar all over again
