Best part of the interview was, Matty describes Equine Therapy at rehab as “basically me rolling my eyes in a field.”

Their debut...is only okay

 

I love the debut but I’m not blaming anyone who didn’t get on board with it. Now, ILIWYS is a masterpiece and that should’ve been the moment they were critical darlings. It was kind of the beginning of that though since it did get mostly good reviews.


all this “I liked the band before it was cool” stuff going on ITT is pretty lame

Don't get the crappy reviews for S/T. That album still sounds fresh to me. Probably my most played record too.

the s/t would've gotten better reviews had any major critical organ managed to listen to the eps as well (imo)

 

I’m talking about the condescension with which they wrote. I’m fine if you disagree about the album’s quality, but you don’t have to be a jerk about it.

They do it like once every quarter (and to be fair, The 1975 didn’t even get it as bad as some others have), and it’s honestly my least favorite thing about the site. I have no problem with posting a negative review, but you should be making a point (see the GVF debut) vs just taunting the band.

 

The cool thing about the p4k review is that a lot of people will give this band, and probably their precious records, another chance. A lot of people take notice of what they say is and isn’t good, for better and for worse

Pitchfork reviewed two EPs though?

 

they reviewed one. different reviewers for the s/t and the facedown ep. the facedown ep is also not what i'm talking about (music for cars and iv mostly but also sex)

 

i couldve swore they reviewed sex but youre right

 

fun fact: maura johnston, who reviewed the live record last year for pfork, is the person who sent me the sex ep in 2012 and also for my birthday took me to the music hall of williamsburg show where they opened for the neighbourhood

 

Lol are you citing the GVF review as valid criticism? That was one of the more obnoxious, unneccesary reviews I’ve seen on the site since the old school writers

 

In 2013? I went to a few shows on that tour, not that specific one. I saw them at the HMV Institute in Birmingham. They had the smallest room there too I believe.

 

i only really mention this bc i'm actually... excited that how we've both felt about this band for the past six years is becoming the dominant narrative

 

also i already said this at least twice but this band didnt get huge over night. theyve always had a lot of dedicated fans and a fanbase that has had upward growth since day one....
