BB has 100% control of the roster. He has another guy, Caserio, who acts as assistant gm/scouting director, but BB has the final say.

Franchise quarterbacks are way more important to the success of a team over a season, five years, ten years, etc... than an all time great cornerback.

Yeah the thing that made me hesitant is remembering that basically every team wants to hire Caserio at this point and no one can hahaha.

Their formula is have the greatest quarterback of all time (who gets paid, what, 14th? 15th?) and the greatest coach of all time. 31 other teams don't have that luxury.

Yeah, no team will ever win the super bowl with, say, a back-up quarterback

I'm so glad that Brian Gaine has been a good GM for the Texans so far (for the most part), because I wanted Will McClay so badly and was very disappointed he wouldn't interview.

Brady's still the highest player on the team, and had big contracts when he signed them. It's not like they're giving him chump change, his contract just hasn't been up.

And shut up with your stupid ass Nick Foles argument @CarpetElf , you know for a damn fact high draft pick investment Carson Wentz was the only reason Nick Foles had the opportunity to win the Super Bowl anyway.

So tired of that bad argument, get it out of this damn thread.

Crazy shit happens, but you can't depend on that happening for your team. If given the choice, go with the option that is much more likely: a decade of having an established good franchise quarterback over 1 corner.

it's such a pain to look this up every time because i never remember how but Brady has at no point been given a Stafford/Jimmy G level deal (relative to the rest of the deals being given out).

Deion Sanders is typically known as the greatest cornerback ever and the only times he won a Super Bowl is when he went to teams with an established Hall of Fame quarterback.

I literally never said pick one corner over Wentz. I said pick the DEFENSE over Wentz. If one road is Wentz and the other is Ramsey, Telvin, Jack, Bouye, and Yannick. Then I'm taking road #2.

Brady definitely signed a deal where he was the highest paid QB in the NFL. I don't remember what year it was but he for sure became the highest paid QB in the league at one point.

His current contract is a steal, but really every contract is a steal for Brady.

Jimmy G's deal is only bad because they wasted 35 million dollars this year. All of that was guarantees. But SF literally had that cap space to throw away. Only difference is they didn't do what we did and waste it on Julius Thomas / Jared Odrick ass bust free agents.

When he hits the field next year? He's getting paid like most QB out there. Much less than Alex Smith and Kirk Cousins too. And 75% of his guarantees already paid out.

From here on he's actually very low risk high reward.

  16. It’s funny how far behind times Gettleman was/is. He drafted Benjamin and Funchess because “you can’t teach size”. And he had me fooled. During the KB days our offense was so much better without him. Now we see how much better we are with DJ and Samuel being the main guys.

I think Funchess is better than KB. But speed is so much more valuable than big dudes who can’t get separation.

  17. Look at what the Phins did in the off-season. I made fun of them for being so small at WR but they made good moves. Those guys were playmakers. Sucks they got hurt.

Typically, any new QB deal for a guy who is boderline "franchise QB" and above the new record setting contract only to be broken by the next guy who signs one, that's just how the NFL is now

The best way to be unbiased is to know exactly what your team did wrong.

Oh yeah, I absolutely give that contract to Brady. I don't give that contract to someone who has yet to win a playoff game.

26.6, 26.7, and 27.0 are the three years after that. We JUST had this conversation haha.

It's just SO damn hard to have an elite franchise QB. I get that Brady is the best QB of all time, but you can definitely build similar rosters to the Patriots around other franchise QBs if you're able to (as @EntryLevelDave said) Moneyball and get high value players at low prices on the defense, at receiver, etc. and only invest in the players that are harder to find at a high level, like QB and OL where they're not that expensive in the first place.

Always hated Funchess but I was so high on KB's potential. Though I thought they would use him as a lethal WR2, not a useless WR1 haha

Tom Brady is proof of the formula. BB saw bad value in Drew Bledsoe, and looked for any reason possible to move on from him. The reason eventually became Brady, but if it wasn't Brady it was def going to be someone else.

Then from there he has moved on from top tier talent earlier than other teams would because it avoids headaches 2,3,4 years down the road. Lawyer Milloy, Richard Seymour, Logan Mankins, Revis, etc...It's not often the Pats have a huge load of dead cap space. It's also not often that have huge salaries at certain positions other teams invest big in. WR and RB come to mind, DE, LB and CB too. Stephon Gillmore is the only huge salary in those groups currently.

  25. One more thing, I think the Patriots were way ahead of everyone else with their receiver strategy. They’ve always had the small guys who know how to get separation and then make guys miss after the catch. Now that’s what everyone is trying to do.
