Hot take (apparently): "Give Yourself a Try" is the band's best "opener" and is way, way better than "Love Me."

I guess the disconnect for me is the implication of sleeping with fans. I don’t really see it that way. The people I see or sleep with are fans of my bands music, does that mean I’m sleeping with a fan? It could just be people that he’s met in different countries that he sees each time he passes through. I don’t think it’s as gross as people are making it out to be. Happens all of the time with artists and performers.

Sure, and your experience doesn't negate what I'm saying about power imbalances either. I can see why people don't like the lyrics, though it's not going to stop me from listening to the song.

Not hot to me at all, considering it's a top 5 song of theirs!

i assume jason has more insight into this than me but i just thought "be my mistake" was just about cheating on the road, not sleeping with (maybe) fans

  8. "Don't wait outside my hotel room, just wait until I give you a sign" seems, to me, at least to imply something along those lines.

I mean, I get the people relating to it thing, there was a time in my life where I would have too. Unfortunately. I hurt, and was hurt by, people because we weren't honest about what the relationship was. But, at this stage of my life ... drinking yourself into meaningless sex where you treat the other person poorly ("I don't want to hug, I just want to sleep") ... is a message I don't like at 35. I've heard those exact songs from the bromo groups for like 20 years now, I'm just over all of it.

True, but that doesn't mean I have to like it or think it's good or enjoy the message I take from it.

I guess I didn’t think about it that way, I definitely assumed fans when I heard it. I’ll have to listen closer next listen. It’s still not something I think I’ll relate to much.

Not trying to discredit anyone for liking it either, I hope I’m not coming off that way. Just trying to explain why it doesn’t do much for me.

lol no one's saying you can't like a song!

I guess we’ll just have to disagree that it’s a power imbalance. First of all, I’m sure Matty is not sitting there going “yeah the girl I love bought me these jeans”, and people are allowed to set whatever boundaries they want for sexual encounters...if the other person understands what they want, how is that a power imbalance? I’ve slept with guys who have told me they didn’t want me to sleep over after and I understood. I still slept with them, didn’t sour the experience at all even though I knew he was missing someone else.

  14. The implication I take from the waiting by the hotel room line implies, to me, to at least be in the realm of what their fans do. I've been saying "implies to me" because that's my interpretation. That aspect is just one reason I don't like the theme of the song, the other being treating someone you're having meaningless sex with poorly. There's an honest and healthy way to have one night stands where both people know what it is and consent to that, and in my opinion, this song does not convey that. If one person is more invested, wants to cuddle after sex, and the other is trying to drink themselves into a place where they can then listen to the jokes ... I don't think that's the healthy version, and, that plays into why I don't like the song or theme as well.

I don't think anyone is taking the jeans lyric as something he actually said to someone.

I have a bartender I like to see when passing through NY. I’m sure if I hit the level of fame hat Matty did, I’d have to be more discreet about who I see and where so I don’t have crazy fans trying to track my whereabouts. I guess that’s why I don’t explicitly see it as being about fans.

Then why bring it up as something that implies a power dynamic

Well, I interpreted it as a comment from someone who looks up to him. The same way we're like "I love that new haircut" or "I want to buy the hat from that music video".

  21. I don't know what that has to do with the line. If you're seeing someone when passing through, you can call them and schedule something. They'd never be waiting outside your hotel anyway. I don't know if it's explicitly about someone real or not, but I do think the there's some context clues in the line that it could be about saying "don't wait outside my hotel to hook up with me, I'll give you a sign if I pick you" ... and then drinking until he's ready to have sex ... with someone that wants more. That combination, I'm not a fan of. For the reasons already said.

No one's saying you can't like the song! Hell, I like the song. I'm just saying I can understand why folks don't.

I still don’t see how that has anything to do with a power dynamic. Just because he’s famous? He’s still a person. People I date tell time they love my necklace all of the time. The one my ex get me for Christmas 3 years ago that I only take off to shower.

People can like things without it being any more than that.
