Don’t go to other places on the internet. My IRL friends who don’t follow much music that closely but love the 1975 think this is phenomenal. I think this will go over well with their fan base

Those bands will forever chase a vibe instead of recognizing the true nature of what makes this band what it is. The songwriting and arrangement of sound is purposeful and calculated. Matty and George aren't simply getting lucky with a synth sound.

I agree with you on The Maine. Luckily, their other influences allowed it to come off as an honest reflection of the band and a logical step after American Candy.

I can't for the life of me remember who said it, but there's a quote along the lines of, "If you get your musical inspiration from one artist, you will forever sound like a poor man's version of that artist. Being influenced by 50 however, you can truly create something special."

It's obviously far too early to tell, but I think The 1975 have done what I think all classic records have done. ABIIOR defines the time it was released within.

  6. By and large we’ve avoided that level of cynicism, or wanting to be seen as cool enough to be cynical ... which feels like a lot of the “commentary” sometimes.

"Inside Your Mind" to me feels like they took the sound / atmosphere of the EPs and applied that aesthetic to a massive heart on your sleeves 80s arena rock song

Once again this band excels at applying their own specific stamp to a particular genre and elevate any established tropes into something completely fresh

Odd comparison, but this album is making me have a similar thought that Red Dead Redemption 2 did.

I have no idea what video game developers of open world games are going to do. It's the official benchmark.

This album could end up setting a standard in the pop realm.

Me too and this website helped me move past viewing them as just "guilty pleasures."

I'm not quite sure how to explain buying three Cobra Starship albums in my youth though :-|

Thank you for providing a safe place for everyone here online and for giving us a place to go to discuss the music we love. AbsolutePunk and Chorus.fm have always expanded my horizon with music. I even discovered The 1975 through AP. So thank you for all you do. It doesn't go unnoticed.

Yeah just wanted to say thanks to Jason and Kyle for that podcast in 2013 for outlining the self titled because this has become my favorite band based on that one podcast I had never heard of them before that!
