I see what you're saying and think we mostly agree. Trades, just like draft grading or something, shouldn't really be judged until a year or two or three out from them to see if they were good or not.

I'm hoping Michael Gallup bucks that trend and is a true #2

He's looked pretty decent so far, as far as rookies go. He should get even more looks now that Cooper is on the team.

Yeah Taco and Claiborne are the only ones I'd consider a miss and Taco's too young to tell.

So this decade the Cowboys 1st round is:
    2010: Dez Bryant (hit)
    2011: Tyron Smith (hit)
    2012: Morris Claiborne (miss)
    2013: Travis Frederick (hit)
    2014: Zack Martin (hit)
    2015: Byron Jones (hit)
    2016: Ezekiel Elliott (hit)
2017: Taco Charlton (too young to tell)
    2018: Leighton Vander Esch (hit)

Given the Cowboys ability to draft in the 1st and good amount of subsequent misses in later rounds, I find it hard to believe that Amari Cooper is better than who the Cowboys would draft in 2019. It's definitely a scenario where I get the need to overpay but would've overpaid differently so that you can keep that 1st.

I’m still working on my scouting skills. I’m better at evaluating NFL players than I am at evaluating how college talent will translate to the NFL

And tbh I would’ve been all for the Cowboys sending like a 2nd this year and a 3rd or 4th next year for Cooper. That would’ve still been better than the first round pick

Mariota can run fast. Bortles can run well.
Mariota can throw short. Bortles can't.
Bortles can throw deep. Mariota can't.
Bortles is invincible. Mariota is made of glass.
Mariota is smart but can't do it. Bortles can do it and is a dumb dumb.

I was kind of wrong on Fuller? I was right on his skills but wrong on the coaches? I thought it was a bad pick because he was mostly a burner. Turns out that works GREAT haha

I don't disagree with any of this except that we're not good at drafting or developing receivers in general, so I could see us easily whiffing on that.

My issue with Caldwell remains the same. Is he good at drafting or is he just there to take the leftovers?

Jalen Ramsey and Myles Jack were regarded by many as top five prospects. Yannick, while outperforming his draft stock, was the obvious pick there. Fournette was obvious. Robinson was too. Smoot and Dede were both highly touted guys that fell from grace (one of whom by being a piece of shit). Bryan was a Top 15 prospect that fell. Chark and Harrison were fringe 1st round talents.

Ohh, you’re saying blend them into one average quarterback. I thought you meant a two QB offense with Bortles and Mariota. I was about to short circuit.

Wasn't it confirmed that it was his dad who leaked the video? Apparently the dude is extremely toxic, from what I remember reading a couple years ago.

Ramsey and Jack, yeah, we just got hella lucky. I’m just glad we didn’t trade more picks to draft Jack earlier, a more foolish GM might not have waited that long.

Bryan is a great value pick but we needed OL, or a WR really badly, Campbell and Malik are already doing what Bryan does at an elite level. I sorta still wish we moved up for DJ Moore.

I loved the Robinson pick and man it fucking sucks he’s not with us this year. Obvious, sure, but still nice to nab a starting left tackle outside of round 1. We did pull the trigger and trade up as soon as possible once he got out of Day 1 - like Myles Jack, not a “genius” move by Caldwell but a sensible one.

I disagreed then and disagree now Chark was a fringe first rounder. Where we drafted him is fine but not a bargain. Keep in mind Moncrief is tall and ran a 4.38 and he went on mid day two as well. Chark showed he could run block and play special teams for sure at LSU but didn’t even get a chance to learn much nuance as a WR there. He has a lot of potential but not enough concrete right-now receiving skills to where he was worth more than late round 2.

Dede was “highly touted”... I guess, but he was never gonna be more than a slot guy. Dude is just not even close to the right size to handle a skilled press corner. Smoot, I still don’t really like the Smoot pick.

Yannick was NOT the obvious pick haha. He was regarded as a 5-6 rounder everywhere I looked. He was not on the radar for a lot of NFL teams because he just never played run defense, wasn’t big enough to look like he could learn, and wasn’t seen as a 3-4 OLB becuase Maryland ran a 4-3. He was a mismatch written off as, not built for NFL style defensive line. The only thing he had was sack production against fairly weak competition in college, but early round 3 definitely shows Caldwell knew something the rest of the league didn’t. We are fortunate that Yannick has had an answer for all the knocks on him as a prospect.

If we missed out on Jack you'd be calling Caldwell foolish for not trading up.

Oh yeah I wish we had Jackson or Moore. Cause this is an elite defensive line class this season. Granted, great for receivers as well. but NO QB worth taking in the first round.

I don't AGREE with it. But he was highly touted. Smoot I also don't agree with but he was listed as a top pick in earlier mocks.

That's fair. I valued him above some guys that went above him.

Oh yeah. He waited longer than I would’ve waited. That’s why I think it was smart haha. Because they announced before round 2 began that Jack didn’t need arthroscopic knee surgery and he was vastly overstating his injury on accident.

I still wanna trade for Jimmy G next year lolll.

You’ll call me crazy but check out his contract - $37 million of his $48.1 million in guarantees would already be paid THIS YEAR by the 49ers. And then the next $7.5 million comes next year. So after one year if he sucks post injury? Already cuttable cause he only has a couple million guaranteed left on the books.

The ACL creates uncertainty for sure. But the dude mentally is THERE. He knows how to play quarterback. It honestly can’t be worse than Blake Bortles, and on the flip side it *could also be WAY BETTER than Bortles and we could be competitive again.

I’d risk wasting a first round pick for that, since we wouldn’t have to lose more than one year of his salary if he isn’t worth it. He’s more worth a first round pick than Amari Cooper, and we are certainly that desperate for a QB at a time when there are none to draft.

Call me crazy but I don't want a 27 year old QB coming off an ACL tear who has still yet to play a full season and has thrown 12 TDs to 8 INTs with his current team and is owed $81 million.

Where is this hypothetical where the 49ers are willing to trade Jimmy G coming from?

I just don't see them shopping him at all.

He is not “owed” 81 million. The only way he gets that money is if he continues to earn it. He is possible to cut in 2019 and easy to cut in 2020.
